i wasn't this way, but trendy and wanting to become popular. i was naturally popular and didn't desire popularity, but just wanted the bullies to stop. also, many of them want their driver's license, credit card and cell phone around this time and pandering to their parents for one. i wasn't really typical in the teenage ways though.

i guess most of them are into the fm radio and pop music, and another question, is music the main focus of pleasure for teens, and does the average teen buy lots of cds all the time and prefer music to tv?

We "are" lazy, unmotivated, we hide our inner smarts so we aren't expected of great things, we are unreliable, forgetful, poor, hungry (all the time), we listen to horrible music, we leave a lot of messes, and we can't drive.

Which makes me want to rant about this:

I HATE parents think they are much better drivers because 'they've been driving 35 years' and we've been driving '35 weeks'. I hate the way parents act like driving is the HARDEST THING TO DO. While it does come with a lot of responsibility, it's not a complicated thing to do. And just because you drive a long time does NOT mean you are a better driver. Come drive where I live and you'll find yourself angry with the idiots who still cannot merge onto simple highways.

^ but it's not BS when statistically teenagers are among the most dangerous awful drivers on the road. Being adult or being a teen doesn't alone make you a bad driver but generally speaking, teenagers are too scatter-brained to really be "good" drivers. (hey, this is a stereotype thread) :p

I thought I was a great driver at the time too... until I totalled an M3

Driving is like sex. If you can tell me it isn't better when you're older, you're not doing it right.

I used to think that too. Then I smashed my car on a snowy road at the tender age of 17. On a side note, pulling the handbrake in a snowy parking lot never seems to get old :)

Another teen stereotype: most of them seem to dislike wallets and prefer to carry their money in crumpled little wads.

Perfect example of there being truth in stereotypes. :p

That's men, not only teenagers.

While that's true, teen males think of sex more often then adults. That's because we're immature little pricks. So when someone says boob, we all laugh out of control. :p

See I disagree with that, my mom and dad are more scatter brained than any teen I know. Given that we are wreck less, we are mainly wreck less consciously.

Case in point older people will forget to use turn signals which can be VERY dangerous in my opinion, they are put on all cars for a reason :). Also I know as people get older they lose their ability to process information quickly and effectively. Typically the best ages for that is indeed 16-30. So not only will you make worse decisions driving when you are older, but you will make them slower too.

Haha sorry this is something I would debate until I die, I believe I am the best driver out of my family even if my dad has been driving since he is 16 I can judge distance better than him, and my reaction time is 80% faster. Statistically I am a better driver.

And when someone says "penis" Oh, man, watch out!

Then again, teenage boys do hump anything that moves :p OMFG, if you saw the way kids my age dance. You would think they are having sex right there on the dance floor.

I know I did :D Wait.... that was too personal. Never you mind. ;)

If you are statistically a better driver, why are the insurance rates for those of your age group significantly higher than those for "older" drivers?

Believe me, insurance companies understand statistics far better than you.

when i asked that question to my insurance provider the only thing she said was based on the number of years of the driver. Nothing else.. believe me because I tried to lower my rates any way I could, however I got nothing off because the company makes a ton of money off me driving around not getting into accidents. :D

Uhhh... I eat my family out of the house:p

that made me laugh lol

ill take a parent driving over ANY 16 year old everyday of the week

my bro turned 16 and i was fearing for my life. they like to drive fast and have no respect for others on the road. teens also are the ones who hassle bikeriders by throwing things and the like

that really upsets me as i ride my bike a heck of a lot more than drive my car

um insurance providers are not the ones who make the rates. it is fairly easy to becaome an insurance rep. just a series of tests basically.

your question was akin to asking an apple sales rep when so and so is coming out. aka they have no ffing idea

and my posts need to be merged apparently lol

Which reminds me of this Onion story from a few years ago...

Thank god he discovered LED ZEPPELIN ( only second to The Rolling Stones)
Imagine IF he would have discovered some pop trash (eg flick on stupid MTV)

On to the topic I would like share my experiences. ( I got a lot of flak for these things sometimes even when I was innocent)
Boozing on cheap alcohol
having spur of the moment unprotected sex in the back seat of a car.
Borrowing money from just about everyone.
Unhygienic
Over the top phone bills.

Well, cause I'm 16, I might as well desribe my life. I think my parents don't understand me most of the time. They don't know that I have a girlfriend (but I have a felling they will find out soon). I hate it was my Cross Country team doesn't get much attention, we've gone to states for 8 years in a row. My ex just lost her v card and my girlfriend is friends with her and theyre mad at each other cause my gf doesn't want my ex to get hurt or pregnant cause they used no protection and she doesn't agree with that or the drinking she has gotten into lately. I try to stay out of it. I think about sex but I don't want to ever harm my girlfriend doing that. I'm a hard worker but some people do say I'm bossy sometimes when I get frustrated with something. I use lauguage that I shouldn't but I'm working on that, I've been doing that less. I get my drivers licence next Friday and after that I'm free in a sense. I hate it when I would go somewhere and just because your a teen they don't treat you like an equal. I could go on but I'll spare all of you the rest...

OMG, thank you for mentioning that. Us teenagers don't have rights. I hate that. My mom always brings up that when it comes to freedom of speech per se. " We can do it because we're adults and you don't have rights as a kid." BS. The Constitution protects me from the day I was born. I have the same freedom of speech rights as they do. I think I am going to start another civil rights movement. Who is with me? :p

I don't think there's going to be another civil movement anytime soon...

Teen: Why can't I go out to the movies with my friends?
Parent: Because I said so.
Teen: Why not?
Parent: Because I said so!
Teen: Why can't I get a reason?
Parent: I'm the parent and your not so stop asking me or else I'm going to ground you for a week!!!
(Teen walks away felling like his/her parents don't understand or care about them)

Well I guess my mom trusts my driving beceause the day I got my license she let me take her Benz all around town. And she let me drive to Charlotte (a city I know nothing about), and she really does believe I am a good driver.

And a lot of punks are bad drivers because they don't understand what it means to drive. They have no respect for anything. Again, it's a stereotype. I'm not going to lie - I am a very good driver. And most people would laugh at me because I failed my driver's test the first time (HEY, I can write a huge paper on that one - it was pure folly !!! ) but... that test has nothing to do with actual driving, anyways.

They are right. it takes roughly 5 years of driving experience before some one driving skills are up to average. There is a reason the first rate drop quite off happens when one turn 21. Also people under the age of 25 are more likely to take risk. This increase the chances of a wreck.
If you want ways to lower you rates. Taking driver training (driver Ed) is a pretty good rate reduction and then take Defensive driving which is another 10% off. Also good grades should get you another rate drop.

The 2 worse driving groups that control the largest chunks of wrecks are the very young drivers (teenagers) and the very old. Very young because of lack of experinces and stupidity. Very old because of poor reaction time

I HATE parents think they are much better drivers because 'they've been driving 35 years' and we've been driving '35 weeks'. I hate the way parents act like driving is the HARDEST THING TO DO. Hate to break it to you but you parents are right. Driving is a hard thing to do and does come with a lot of responsibility. You are a rookie driver. You have not learned what information to filter out and what to focus one when driving. You do not know how to deal with a lot of things that you only learn by experience. You have not gain the ablity to just "flip a switch" to very attentive driving.

Studies they have done between a teenage new drivers and an experience driver is they look at the eyes and what they focus on. An experience drivers eyes are darting around all over the play never staying in one spot for very long. They tend to also focus much farther down the road. Both things you do not do correctly yet (and do not pretend that you do) While you parents may make it look easy it is because they are able to filter out the stuff that is going ok. I want to say 80%+ of the things going around me when I drive is nver given any active though to it. Reason being is it filtered out for that other 20% that requires my attention. The 80% are basic things like checking gauges and look no cars in my mirrors. Or a car that is going to same speed as me. My filter is mostly looking for things that are out of place or can become a problem (stop lights, brake lights, interstices with cars ready to pull out ect)
A new driver has not gain the ability to have there subconsciouses handle most of the work load in driving. Most of the time you will not react quick enough on the brake because it not an automatic processes to slam on the brake when needed. Lets add to that you do not know when to steer instead of braking.

There are a lot of things about driving that one can only learn from experience. I used to think driving was the easy thing to do. Then I started having to deal with things like nasty traffic. Then all of a sudden you quickly learn that unless you can have you subconscious deal with all the basic driving stuff it very over whelming. Hell it can be overwhelming just trying to keep track things that require attention much less have to focus on basic driving things. That is when filtering for information is a very valuable skill. It is information overload other wise. You have to know what is important and has to be kept track of and what can be dumped.

As for idiots who can not merge on to the freeway get used to it. There will always be idiots out there. More often that not those idiots will be young drivers. It about knowing how to prepare and adjust for it before they cause you problems. Plus people just make mistakes. I know I made my fair share and had close calls. We all will get those.

As for the point of this tread.
Teenage styrotype They think they can drive and are great drivers and in reality they are among the crappiest drivers out there. Mix with inexperience and then thinking they know what they are doing. BAD BAD combination.
