wouldn't it be cool if this whole thing is just hype that's gone off the deep end?

a colossal put-on

I think it will be what Apple imagined the MacBook Air would be.

My wife and I love our Air. We use it all over the house. We fight over it at the kitchen table, want it on our family room couch, bring it upstairs while lying in bed, it is so convenient. It wouldn't work well as our main computer, but we have two others for when we want to sit at a desk and do work. However when just wanting to browse the web, check e-mails or update facebook pages, it is perfect.

The problem is that most people won't want to spend $1500 for a 2nd or 3rd computer, but the convenience is undeniable. Enter the tablet, it can be transported throughout the house for basic functions, put in a backpack etc. and at a price-point of $500-700, more people would consider having it and would love it.

I already have that...it's called an iPhone...I use it to browse the web, check e-mails, and update facebook pages...

that being said, I do see the viability of an iPad (a morph of an iPhone and the MacBook Air, for about $600)...

that being said,

When they did the Mac it was 100 hrs... but they are older (and wiser) now!

Nah, they only managed to get 10% more efficient in the past few decades. Eventually Steve will see the difference and realize they could be spending that 10% on other projects...

are you talking about MacRumors or the people on MacRumors ?

MacRumors is just reporting what is said elsewhere.

Stories and rumors can get a mind of their own and i just think it's amusing how far they can go.

certainly the members here aren't contributing to some farce.

that would be rather paranoid.

or Maybe they are working on said tablet in Roswell NM?

I have both an iPhone and a MBA and you really can't compare the two. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone (except for awful AT&T and the dropped calls), but browsing the web/typing e-mails on the Air is 1000x better than on the iPhone.

1. I thought Jobs had been actively involved in apple business prior to his physical, June return to the campus. This article suggests otherwise.
2. The second proposed tablet was nixed because of inadequate memory? Couldn't it have just been offered with more? Or does a limit on RAM suggest which OS was planned for that device?
3. Does Jobs' "jarring" attention to detail bode well or ill for the product?
4. If he's only brought this scrutiny to bear in June, what does that say about the earliest possible release of such a product?

I would have thought the product would dictate the marketing, not the other way around. If he was going to exercise "jarring" influence I would have wanted it on the product, not advertising.

These are good points. I will speak to two of them;

2) If the tablet was nixed for lack of memory prior to the iPhone being released, the intended OS can not be confidently deduced. If the tablet was nixed for lack of memory after the iPhone release we can assume the intended OS and apps would require significantly more than an iPhone's. I think it is reasonable to assume that the full OSX was intended for the device when it was nixed but since the App Store has been such a hit, the focus has perhaps turned to achieving success with a smaller platform than full OSX. In other words, we still don't know.

4) Sure, if jobs only started working on the tablet in June there's no way a 2009 release is forthcoming. However, he has of course been working on it for years and years in earlier projects and I remember reports of him having been working on the new tablet project even while ill (at the hospital for instance). So perhaps his focus is now on the marketing if the product specs have already been decided on. Now what he really needs to sell is "want" and tell people why the need this device and how it can be used, not to mention how to hold the thing while working it. This is the marketing part, that will take great care. Much more care than the "buy it cause it doesn't have malware and viruses" type of advertising ;)

Inside Info

This is all the info I can give you.

It is running full-blown OSX.
It will be very revolutionary in a way I can't tell you.
Apple will be releasing it Q1 2010.

When the article says marketing, most people associate it to advertising, box design, etc. The stuff used to make the "image" for the product. But in full, marketing is the whole process of thinking of who is using it, what the audience is, what does that audience want to do with the product, etc, etc. and THEN after the device is designed (features/benefits to users, etc) they think about how to market/advertise/sell it. What most people don't realize is that marketing is NOT just advertising...

The Apple love-fest comments here make me want to vomit.

Guys, it's just going to be a tablet. It's going to be a big iphone with a big screen. That's it. It isn't going to change the world, it isn't going to be perfect, and it isn't another Steve Jobs creation that is going to blow your mind. It might have by default voice recognition or something lame like that, but that's really it.

You mean like this?

I think the difference between Full and three quarter blown OS is getting less and less.

Wouldn't be surprised if at the next iPhone Roadmap meeting or the music event they roll the iPhoneOS SDK within OS X SDK.

Switching between Cocoa Touch and Cocoa as the device warrants.
All devices just bunch of pre-configured build targets and NIB files.
Some devices get additional frameworks they others might not but all the core API's supported.

I think it is a strong chance the device will be full cocoa version of the OS but drops all legacy. A lot of important apps have held out on porting to cocoa have jumping in now or will in the next few months. All require Leopard or better.

They must have been shown something they couldn't miss the boat on.
Fullish OS X on an ARM powered tablet, would sure fit that.

I hope apple will release a tablet mac very soon. I can't wait for it! :)))))
It would be glad, if the app store apps are also runable on the tablet mac! :)))

I'm sure he wants to make sure this comes out perfect. after all look what happened when he was gone (iPod shuffle 3G)

Do you really think that this thing was developed in the few months that he was gone? It takes much longer to develop, design and test a device like that. They didn't just throw this thing together while he was away. He most certainly was involved in the development of this thing. In addition he was involved in the most crucial parts of the business, even though he was on leave. You can bet that new product introductions were run past him. Even Jobs makes mistakes you know.

I'm sure we will see some posts in the vain of:

Fanboy #1: "Damn that Snow Leopard Box is Ugly"
Fanboy #2: "Yeah, they must have rushed it out while Steve was taking a dump, he couldn't have been involved with that"

I bet it'll run iPhone OS beefed up a bit to run more complex applications.

It's got to at least have OS X for it to even be an option for me. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone OS is great for a small mobile device, a giant iPhone requires a step up.

I started a thread with a poll about this. You can read my comments there!

Interesting. I appreciate Steve Jobs' obsessiveness - I can identify with it to a certain extent, although I suspect his is more compulsory while I'm more voluntary, lol. But in the end, I think it's a good thing. After all, it's this attention to detail and his visionary nature that makes Apple products so incredible.

I can agree with that. I do the same thing. No, I am not OCD. I am very laid back with most things. It is only with my visions and creations that I want as close to perfection as possible. I admire products that are created in that manner, hence the reason I love Apple! :)

Who's to say he wasn't involved in that Shuffle.

I'm sure he wants to make sure this comes out perfect. after all look what happened when he was gone (iPod shuffle 3G)

Steve was likely involved in that product too. By the way just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is a total failure. You might see some of that tech in the next round of iPod updates.

Required features:

- Light. As light as possible. The MacBook Air is too heavy.
- Small. As small as possible. The MacBook Air is too large.
- Mac inside. To run Apple Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint (for video presentations).
- Video-out for full-blown Keynote and PowerPoint presentations from NATIVE files (".key" and ".ppt") on videoprojectors, including transitions, animations, video, etc.
- USB2 port for wireless remote control like Keyspan-by-Tripp Lite remote controls
http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/product-series.cfm?txtSeriesID=517&EID=2988

So, just make the presentation on the larger Mac, save the file to the small device, carry it in your pocket (light and small as the OQO would be great), connect it to the videoprojector via the supplied mini video port on the device to VGA adapter, and use the wireless USB Keyspan remote to control the presentation.

The device will have a huge halo effect on all corporate, education and domestic markets, selling Apple more devices, Macs, iPhones and iPods.

We need thousands for our University.

If it's true, awesome.

If it has an App store, I will not touch it with a ten foot pole.

Like someone else mentioned, marketing and advertising are not the same thing. Advertising is actually a pretty small part of marketing. Having the product dictate your marketing strategy is the "old" way of doing it. The new way (which Apple happens to be a shining example of) involves, like bobdard said, consumer-oriented thinking -- figuring out exactly how to provide value (haha marketing buzzword) to the customer they're looking at in the context of what's going on right now + Apple's company identity, making a product that can do that as best possible, and then finally executing on it.

Thanks Steve.

I know you've been lurking here all along. That's where you get all your great ideas. The dreamers here make up stuff and you then bring those dreams to life.

Thank you

Do you really need anything more than a laptop/desktop and a smartphone?

You're forgetting about all the people who don't want a laptop because it's too big and heavy, don't have a smart phone because it's too small (without reading glasses), and don't care about it being pocket-sized because they carry a purse (over half the adult population is female).

please -
a multitouch tablet with pen support
mini/mbair/mb specs
12"

i would kill for that one
