I think one thing that a lot of people miss is that WWDC is a Developers' Conference...for...developers...this isn't a consumer-based event. It would be logical that Apple would focus on the iPhone 2 software, and maybe just MAYBE release a new iPhone, but they definitely wouldn't release a new iPhone, update computers, add this that and the other thing to hardware, blah, blah, blah. I would be surprised if they released the new iPhone, even, since it is for developers. The only reason they would have to do that is to get people hyped about new SDK possibilities with changed iPhone hardware.

My initial reaction is that yes Steve is weening us off of him being THE face of apple. So when he does retire etc we recognize the next gen, his successor.

why do you think that. Sure Leopard was delayed due to iPhone, more specifically to get core animation finished. There's nothing yet to imply a similar delay, so i'd say we're back to 12 to 18 months between releases which from Nov 07 = Q1/Q2 2009.

Besides which Apple show's off at least some of the bells and whistles 9 months to a year before release so that developers can get a feel for what they are developing against. They can't just leave it til next May/June and then release it in 1 to 6 months. Thinking either the release is early summer or late Q4.

First Apple have mentioned they would slow down new revisions of their operating system as the system becomes more stable.

Second, it would make sense that if they didn't have the man power to complete Leopard on time then it obviously has a knock on effect with future projects relating to the operating system.

Third, Apple have also stated they are short on man power and hiring is a slow process because they want to be sure who they take on, given that they said that. It isn't likely that they will rush into 10.6 without doing it with enough staff and properly. Apple have even stated they are not going to lay off anybody during this slow down in the economy because it takes them a while to build up their talent. They'd be hurting themselves in the long term and we all know Apple likes to think about the long term.

Fourth, what is the rush for 10.6 anyway?

With the popularity of OS X Touch devices, I think they may add another touch device - iPad or iTablet (with 3G?)

Since the Macs are getting pretty popular, maybe introduce a redesigned Mini, if not then, maybe in the fall.

Yay

I Can't think of a time, besides obviously when he didn't worked at NeXt, that Steve hasn't done the keynote - but they are always great, insanely great you could say:p

I reckon that it will cover:
  • first views of OS X 10.6
  • New iPhone and applications and other phone stuff
  • New Portable Macs
  • And the One More Thing:- PDA/tablet thing

YAY! - go WWDC

I can see SJ saying "we're already working on 10.6, and you won't believe what we're doing with it", but nothing more specific than that, since 10.6 is probably still 18 months away.

As far as speculation that SJ is stepping down goes, keep in mind that other Apple execs almost always share in the keynote presentation. So their inclusion says nothing about SJ's plans. Remember, he is a notorious control freak, so he will likely to continue to head Apple as long as he has the ability and the interest to do so.

It makes me sad to think of Steve leaving.

Since Apple reminds me so much of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, I think they should hide five golden tickets amongst five iPods around the globe. The winners of the golden tickets should get a tour of the Apple Campus, but before they get there a mysterious man in the shadows must try to trick the winners into divulging Apple's secrets to Microsoft. Then once in the Apple Campus, greed will overtake four of the five winners, including one who eats all the sushi at the sushi bar and falls gravely ill. The shortest of Apple employees will sing songs with life lessons about not falling victim to these vices.

Alas, one winner, the meekest of them all, most likely me, will be given the golden key to Apple by Steve Jobs and will live happily ever after.

Suddenly, I don't feel so sad about Steve leaving some day!

That is freakin hilarious!

+1 --10.5 is a mess and probably going to down as the Win98 ME of OSX.

What?

My first mac experience is 10.5 with my iMac and everything works great, all my devices work and I have had no crashes.

Me and my partner have had iMacs since 10.5 came out and both use them multiple hours a day with no problems.

I have had one error where time machine doesn't tell me any more when the last backup was but apart from that it still in fully working order as i use it often.

On my MBP, which has been overall solid till 10.5 turned it into a POS!!

1. The wireless is useless, it just drops when it pleases, requires a reboot sometimes to even get back on my network.10.4.9 is guilty too, don't have time to track down which update is causing this.

2. Launchd has been whirring in my console at full cpu usage, this occured
after the .2 upgrade and this has me fuming. When watching youtube or any flash based material the temps rise and the computer will lock or freeze.

3. My external monitor will cause sudden lock ups with no warning, requiring a hard reboot-This never happened with 10.4, and maybe 10.5.1 IIRC

Apple has become, to me, a disappointingly arrogant company with no concern for customer relations.I could careless about the iphone, and the secret society mentality is frankly getting old.I have sent bug reports, feedback, and just like countless others only to be ignored.

What would make me happy is for Steve Jobs to "open up" more at this WWDC and get the fixes out asap.

Maybe not a mention, but at least a reference.:)

Sounds like Steve will be handing off segments again. It's probably a good idea for Apple to put a few other faces out there to see how they do, and to show investors and media that people other than Mr. Jobs can handle the spotlight okay.

That being said, there's still nothing quite like 100 minutes of pure RDF.:p

Yah man RDF keeps me going for another year ;!

However it IS a smart move that others show their expertise within the company for two main reasons. It doesn't wear out el Jobso keeping him at teh helm longer, and strengthens the brand, stock performance outlook that this company CAN & WILL do well when he does leave amicably and by his OWN accord! You don't want your favorite computer company to once again fall into the hands of imbecile's and the talent leave again, do we ?! HELL NO!

That said this tells me more of Apple pulling out ALL the stops and show us something SERIOUSLY amazing & strong for the OS, coders, fans, & stock value!!

Johnathan Ive at the helm? Gads no his voice is too mello, almost borderline a British electorate stoner. I respect him, even love him & his talents but I couldn't stand hearing his chilled out voice in a whole conference. However that new kid that showcased TimeMachine?! That dude I'll bet will host shows if STeve leaves. He just has that performance nack - even if he was a bit nervous, he really captivated all of us in a REAL user point of view showing us how software should work seemlessly, elegantly, and powerfully.

YES, the 2 bridges on the invitation are 2 different iphones! ... I think....

I am so sick of hearing this ridiculous comment. It is plainly and obviously as stated over and over in many many places OS X and OS X iPhone aka Apple's two platforms, the Mac and the iPhone.

Yes, there may be a surprise iPhone Nano or something, but that will still be the same OS and platform as the iPhone.

It is like you people have blinders on and only see what you want to see lol!

Well first, yes they are slowing down the time between but even 2 year cycle is only 18months away

Second. don't the core teams stay on the same project more or less, maybe with attack teams to move round and add capacity as needed. Even so all the platforms are related the teams would be always working towards version +1 and +2.

Third, but it depends what they are short of. You would expect a lot of what will be in 10.6 is already in 10.5 but undocumented, if the past is anything to go by. So the Tech writers might be needing some work while the programmers are too busy to look sideways.

Fourth, we have no idea what's in there so we can't know if there is a rush.
No doubt part of what is in the next will be new or improved API's so even if it's 18months off 3rd party dev's will want that amount of time to plan thier own feature paths and how they can use those feature, then of cause implement so their 10.6 target version is released not long after 10.6.

Maybe not a full preview, a few teasers of new features and API's really, and the all important cat name of choice. Is all we are really talking about this year.

Nice, but I think you'll end up in a work by Robert Frost instead, while I win the challenge. If I were Apple, I'd do this in a heartbeat because it'd be hilarious and fitting.

Macbook?

I want to buy a macbook very soon. Thought I do not know when to do so since they may be presenting new laptops at the WWDC. So when should I get a laptop?

Probably to brace fanboys like ourselves for the pain. I HATE when Jobs doesn't do the whole thing. Schiller I don't mind, but that Jobs wannabe kid, and Bertrand Solei just make me want to jump off a building. I swear, if one of them announces the new iPhone hardware, I am really going to be upset!!!

I mostly agree. While I do understand that Apple needs to move away from a one man show, I personally don't like any of the other execs.

The young guy is extremely cocky. Schiller isn't a very good public speaker. The others I never care for either. There is definitely a certain excitement and confidence when Steve gives the presentation.

i'm with you bro. i've been waiting for redesigned mb/mbp's for almost two years now. i just recently bought a new mini to keep me occupied for the moment. there have been rumors of redesigned mb/mbp's that apple may unveil @ wwdc. as far as your question goes, i'd wait it out as long as possible till the new ones come out unless you absolutely need one now. who knows, if apple doesn't announce a redesign in june, they may incorporate faster processors, larger hd's or more memory. you never know. well, those are my 2 cents.

Can't wait. I like to see Phil because he adds humor to his presentation usually. However Bertrand needs subtitles and Scott needs to go work on his nervous leg and speaking in public skills.

Keynote overflow

I registered for WWDC '08 and I'm looking forward to the keynote with Steve. I heard last year it was tough to get a seat and people had to arrive quite early. Anyone go last year? How early did you arrive prior to the keynote?

I would recommend no later then 2 hours before to get a good seat.

Here is a tip.. After you go up the escalator and they funnel you into the auditorium immediately go left or right to the wall and rush to the front, you can normally get all the way to the front, well that is just behind the Press, Apple employees and VIPs.

Two years ago I was able to sneak into the Apple employees sections.

I manage about 35 macs of various types, and I have had very few problems. Leopard is faster than tiger, and more robust. I can't see the comparison to ME.

Leopard does feel faster, i agree to an extent...at a cost of far too many bugs and looking at al the radical changes in the OS since its release, Do Apple even know what direction its headed???

The reference to 98ME is based on the fact that 98SE was considered by many to be the best version of M$ OS.98ME was basically a premature OS wrapped in legacy and win2000 code with features that didn't even warrant its release IMHO.By comparison, Tiger while slower in feel is far more stable in my application, audio production, so it is a big YMMV.Updating was necessary because I needed my keyboard(the ELP issue) to work and the fix was only for 10.5 users.I had no intention to upgrade and to have a functioning laptop had to plunk down $129.Apple will never live this one down with me, because now I have more problems despite one fix that should have been available to all.
