I love my family dearly and its probably dysfunctional but i admire this too. I am sure he got to spend sometime with the the family.

I hope to work to the very end of my life, Lord willing.

Retirement holds very little appeal to me.

A captain should die on the bridge :)

still it did kill him, even after he had treatment, but we must remember, they also had to remove his liver, gale balder, some of his intestines, and part of his stomach.

That was only because he waited so long to get real modern medical treatment, during which time the disease was left unchecked to wreck the rest of his body. If he had just gotten the surgery at the beginning when his doctors told him to then he almost definitely would've been perfectly fine for decades to come.

I am sure Steve was dedicated to his work but gotta love hearing these stories that sound too fictional.

As CEO of one of the largest companies in the world, he couldn't lie about the health of the executive chairman.

He also couldn't tell the truth (both out of respect for Jobs' privacy and federal laws that frown on leaking health data).

And, by the way, Apple didn't have a Chairman before 24 August 2011 - the title was created for Jobs.

...then why did he give the false impression to Son that Steve was in good enough health to talk shop? Or is it ok for a CEO to lie about the exec chairman's health as long as they are foreign?

I think that would be a "white lie". For him to suddenly break off a meeting probably meant he got an urgent message, and he just said something to Son that sounded reasonable.

Agree, there's probably less to this story than appears.

I'm sure he did...! But the stories about Steve Jobs planned the next 4 years for apple in my opinion is a ploy... It's to keep stocks from dropping and allow confidence in the current employees, who are smart as hell as well...! But that story being leaked seems like garbage. Either way, whatever, apple is a great company...!

I am surprised it wasn't more than 4 years. Every tech company has a road map of their planned releases way pass the foreseeable future. They don't release one thing, then go back to the drawing board for the next version.

I am most certain that Steve did indeed work with the teams to plan out the next 4 years of hardware/software releases.

 to all the maudlin comments about how sad it was that he was NOT devoting his time to saying goodbyes and preparing to shutdown.

just maybe he had already spent time saying goodbye to those he really cared to say goodbye to, he had already prepared something for his family in the many numerous in-depth interviews he did for the book, and was there in the home everyday now.

just maybe that since he had everything in order by then and like any restless brilliant mind he hadn't turned off the all that experience, obsession, passion that had driven him to where he was, just perhaps the best balm for his mind he could have is Tim coming over to discuss the future details. Jobs was always obsessed with details and future plans (just look at his presentation of the plans for the new Apple HQ at the town meeting a few months ago). What better than to lose yourself in your passion for a timeless moment and forget the inevitable for a little time.

I can't imagine he would have any desire to lay around ticking off the time while family hovered over him wailing.

Well said

Im sure at that point Jobs was dilusional from the meds, I highly doubt he was actually working on apples last product his last day suffering from terminal cancer. It is sad tho

I just love how so many of you have read so much into an anecdotal story that's likely been embellished.

I've read probably hundreds of posts paying tribute to Steve Jobs which contain the the letters: RIP

"RIP" is generally understood to be an abbreviation of the phrase "Rest In Peace."

While I'm not at all convinced that Steve would necessarily wish to be associated with an essentially Christian sentiment, it strikes me that we all might do well to consider doing just that: Letting Steve "Rest In Peace" - let his friends, family, and close co-workers mourn him as a husband, a dad, a brother, boss, friend, rival, or co-worker.

But those of us who didn't know Steve intimately? Lets let him go. Remember him, admire him. Buy the biography he cooperated on.

But lets not obsess over him. I don't think he'd want that. He'd want us to spend every day discovering new things, pushing ourselves to be the best we can be (hopefully with the help of a friendly iProduct...)

Whatever your vocation: Writing novels, or writing code. Building websites or building bathrooms. Making music or selling Toyotas. Do everything you can to bring the same level of excellence and wonder to your work as Steve did to his fields of endeavor. That, it strikes me, is the best memorial Steve could have wished for.

I've always found that a little oxymoronic. Most of Christendom believes a soul lives on, but they say "rest"?

Does no one see that Steve could consider Tim a friend? Whining about not spending time with family and friends...pretty shortsighted take on the subject.

Rest is a spiritual neutral term i think for most faiths.

I admire the sentiment behind your words.

However, "RIP" is not actually a Christian phrase or expression.

Firstly, I'm really saddened by some of the comments here. That Fake video is just hideous.

I can't believe so many are so surprised and even judgemental of a phone call. Tell me...if you had the chance to live a day longer, a minute longer, would you take it? So why on earth would you lay in your bed and let it just happen? Go down without a fight? If you want to live and beat an illness you don't lay there and let it take you. You keep it moving and battle the damn thing, kick it as hard as you can like he did. His family most likely would have encouraged him to carefully work, to do what he LOVED to do, to keep him alive as long as they could. Also as a father, personally I would want to be setting a good example for my family, especially my kids. If I knew I was going out then I would want to show them that you just can't give up. Not for anything. Because they will live their life by those moments. To judge and say he put this before his family is just pathetic.

Steve was an incredible human being and an inspiration to the world. He painted the world with colour and used a brush that was highly unconventional. He will never be replaced and sorely missed.

Well stated. Making value judgements on behalf of others is wrought with folly.

I'm just comparing verbs, no idea what you mean.

Okay I have no idea where you guys are in this conversation, but let me just say something...

"Rest in peace" doesn't even make sense. If we're talking in the sense of religion, well, then he's either going to Heaven or Hell. Saying "rest in peace" doesn't do anything.

And why do we say "bless you" when someone sneezes?
