What does all that have to do with Windows as a day-to-day operating system? It's just a general set of statements, nothing more. Do you have an online account with macOS, iOS, etc.?
IT means I don't want to use it, be exposed to ads on my OS, have Microsoft spy on my activities, record every single action and save that on my C drive filling up my storage.

Oh!
You should complain that on Windows forums, not here.

I was just mentioning why I left - no need to beat a dead horse on a windows forum. I had mentioned that window's direction was counter to my priorities and went back to the Mac. I provided details as to what those items were, but overall, I'm largely done with windows on a personal level.

Okay, but this is an Apple forum, one way or another. Why bring Windows and Microsoft into this discussion?
It's about AppleCare, or the lack of it and I know it's pointless writing to Tim Cook.

You know what Australia is trying to do, about social media for kids? I suppose, some countries, might need to do that for grownups too.
This will be an interesting experiment when these folks, many with limited access to social media, get access to it for the first time as adults. :)

omg how some of you people can devote such emotion to things like this is beyond me.

Words like "love" "passion" "soul" ... Apple is a corporation, like any other. Don't love things that won't love you back. The moment their products don't work for you, you should explore other options. Maybe Apple remains the "least worst" choice, maybe something else turns out to be better. Either way, seek out what is the best mix of price, function, and value for you and your needs, regardless of what anyone else thinks, and independent of brand. There's no benefit to you to be wedded at the hip to Apple because of some embarrassingly maudlin emotional connection. Anything you "feel" about Apple is purely the result of marketing.

How is Tim Cook a “bean counter”? Seriously, I’m not sure where this came from.
Cook designed a world wide supply chain that saved Apple billions of dollars by out-sourcing manufacturing. He was never about the products.

Does he have to be? I was always under the impression he delegated product stuff the product people in the company. Presumably that’s what Jobs intended when he made him CEO.

well if a website sucks, ya know their product is not up to par:

There are quite a few bugs on MacOS, but they're relatively small.

I had to fix a friend's Windows PC a few months ago (I used to be a Windows admin type person many, many years ago) which involved a reinstall.

When I got back home, I could have kissed my Macbook!

As for iOS ... it also has quite a few small bugs, but I assume the competition is the same or worse, and as I think the iPhone 17 is great value for money, there's no point in risking worse hardware and a same-or-worse OS.

Depends on the Category:
1. Computers, absolutely not macOS is the only good option on the market. Linux is a constant headache and Windows is not much better.
2. Tablets and Vision Pro: Nothing better on the market
3. Phones: Maybe. I really like my iPhone AIR, now I can use iMessage on android since I have a macOS server at home.

You know what? I’m with you.

Apple used to own innovation. They created the first accessible personal computer, the first GUI + mouse combo, iPod, iPod nano, iPhone, App Store, iPad - Steve at his peak. Passion, vision, absolute market boss.

The last ten years? VisionPro and HomePod. 👍 Yes, I’m sure the dozen or so VisionPro owners really love it - but the rest of us? Not exactly a headline-grabbing revolution.

iPhone updates in the last decade? Tiny screen tweaks, never ending debates about aluminium, and camera lens shuffles. Everything else is just minor polishing of old tech.

Where’s the hyped stuff:
  • Apple Car/Project Titan – rumors started around the time of Steve’s passing. So it was underway conceptually when he was alive, but the release got pulled.
  • Apple TV “television” – Steve personally hinted at it in 2010 in a Mossberg interview. After his passing? Pulled.
  • Under-screen camera - Rumored since 2019 on MR here. Maybe one day Apple will deliver.
  • Bezel-less screens - MR posted in 2014 suggesting iPhone 6 would be bezel-free. 2016, repeated this, citing supply chain leaks.
Thb it feels like the company is on autopilot. All flash, less substance.
none of the 'hyped stuff' was ever hyped by Apple though...... they are just rumours. Maybe you aren't old enough to ensure it is ground into your memory that you will always be disappointed at Apple if you base your expectations believing the stories, and this certainly includes when Steve was alive

The iPhone certainly wasn't the first phone nor pda or mp3 player - the genius was to combine everything into a killer device with the touch screen and multi touch.

There are plenty of opportunities for similar devices to emerge, but you need to recognise that the phone was a 1 in 20 year product and the timing aligned.

Will we still be using Apple in five years?
Macs: My work machine runs Win11 and I think it’s awful. So yes, I probably will be using macs in the foreseeable future.

Phones: I don’t know. Probably yes. It’s got some bugs. But I used IOS 7 and iOS 13, that were full of bugs. And it got better so I expect iOS to get better again. Maybe not iOS 26, but iOS 27.
(And as an 13 mini user, I ride that phone into the sunset, so yes… 😅)

Tablets: see phones.

Apple TV: this is a true hidden champion IMO, will use that 100%

Other stuff: 50%/50%.

I completely disagree, I think it’s at its peak with the m chips and the yearly upgrades.

I’ve also been an apple owner since 2008 and I think we’ve had it a lot worse in that time.

My only gripe is that the iTunes Store and syncing of music and photos and files etc has been neglected due to their heavy focus on streaming and iCloud. But that’s all tech companies, not just Apple.

I never hear anything much about windows these days so no clue where they are up to nor do I see much advertisement for them anymore

Update.. I just thought of one more gripe and it’s only minor and it’s their woke culture that they always keep highlighting diversity in a forced way. I notice it when they have their keynotes, but more so at an Apple Store. What some of the staff wear is a bit embarrassing.. I’m all for wearing what you want but I think there should be rules at work. BUT that said it doesn’t stop me buying their products

For me it's not quite that simple.
  • Desktop and laptop, macOS.
  • Server and big workstation, Linux.
  • Gaming, Windows, perhaps Bazzite or SteamOS?

Agreed. Windows is so fundamentally broken where Microsoft is pre-loading file explorer instead of fixing the slow performance. Microsoft solution to a poor performance issue is to preload it all in RAM instead of fixing it. And that solution also caused a white flashing effect when using dark mode.

Microsoft broke USB keyboards and mice in recovery mode too. These things should not be happening. But I guess we need to give Microsoft a break being a small development studio I guess (sarcasm).

I have just about had it with Windows, and I barely use it to begin with.

Back on topic. While I am not saying there are ZERO issues, but I have not yet experienced any issues with the latest iOS and macOS. And I have my production systems fully updated too.

Because EVERYTHING is declining these days - from operating systems to entertainment. Not just Apple. And it's reflective in this conversation by having Apple still remaining on top compared to the others like Windows. So while Apple might have a few more bugs here and there (personally I have not experienced any), other alternatives are much worse.

That is how I feel, and how I think maflynn feels as well.

You don't need "social" media to contact the people you care about; you can simply email or call them. You can send photos as attachments or via MMS. This "social" media has simply become a drug.
