It is almost like the phone companies miss the point. The purpose of the phone is to be able to communicate. The ring tone is a real side issue. I think it became a fad and will fade.

Fade in terms of people paying for it but personalised ring tones will become more and more popular when free options allow almost anything to be *easily* placed on the phone.

exactly... the point of a ringtone is to make an annoying sound that is vastly different that the ambient noise to let you know you have a call... when my phone rings i hit the button on the side to silence it asap...

I keep hoping that the iTunes phone would be released already, but for all we know steve could be getting it worked on more and more to make it as best as it possibly can be, IMHO the UI from the screenshots that were around back at the beginning of july were pretty ugly, but for all we know it could look heck alot better now, more mac/iPod-like, I'm hoping it gets released soon though, and for the phone to be sold through Rogers in Canada, that might take a few years though..

What you're describing sounds very similar to a smart phone... ;)

Yeah, my N-Gage QD does everything he wanted other than take pictures, although surely an Apple phone would look better doing them. iCal and Address Book sync flawlessly through iSync over Bluetooth.

Possible basis for iTunes phone

I'm guessing the iTunes phone is going to be based on this design (Motorola SLIVR) that is due to release Q3 2005.
