If you're that against private lotteries, then why not craft laws that go after private lotteries with just a little bit of nuance and intelligence?

Surely you can write a law that allows something like what Steve Jobs proposed, which is clearly not a private lottery.

i dont get what is wrong with his idea?.. you still got to buy a lottery ticket to be in the lottery, you muy and imac to be in that lottery :/ big deal!

some nerd would ened up winning it if not who doesnt give two hoots about atrip to apple.. what would be the point in that!

I've read through all these post and none mentioned the possibility of it being a hidden "lottery".

What is a lottery, isn't it so that a lottery is open and advertised, what if Apple didn't tell anyone about it, only the Top Executives would know and put one single ticket in a box without anyone even be aware there is one inside.
That would work and bypassing those laws.

twisted logic

You got downvoted, but it really is. Who is harmed by this law not existing? What reasonable person would be offended by having to purchase a product to be entered into a contest?

No one benefits from a silly law like this. I'm sure there's some theoretical antitrust mumbo jumbo someone can come up with to justify it, but come on. All it did was ruin a really fun idea.

well, if you can win something without purchasing, then you should also be able to get money from lobbys without being elected.

You think thats bad? Try living in Ontario, Canada. Bylaws here are rampant, they make life a sterile nightmare. It doesnt help that Canadians are passive either, the government says jump, Canadians say 'how high?'

So true
