Forbes has released its annual list of the 400 richest Americans, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs checks in in 42nd place with a net worth of approximately $6.1 billion. Jobs gained $1 billion in net worth over last year's calculations, but moved up only one position in the rankings.
In January he unveiled Apple's iPad tablet amid a media frenzy; the device has so far beaten the hype with more than 3 million sold since April. In May Apple's market cap overtook Microsoft's to become the most valuable tech company in the world. Despite a super-publicized antenna problem, Apple's latest iPhone sold 1.7 million units 3 days after launch. Majority of fortune comes from Disney; as largest shareholder owns about $4.4 billion of stock. Reed College dropout founded Apple 1976.
Jobs' new net worth of $6.1 billion appears to be his highest to-date after a brief dip last year from highs of $5.7 billion in the 2007 and 2008 surveys.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates remains at the top of the list for the 17th consecutive year with a net worth of $54 billion, up $4 billion from last year but still below his recent high of $59 billion in 2007. The report also notes that Gates has poured $28 billion into charity, primarily through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

I've just heard this, I'm not sure if it's true, but does Steve Jobs make $1 a year from Apple? I've hear that his salary is just a dollar and all his money comes from his investments in his company...Anyone know?

Steve's salary from Apple is indeed $1 per year. This is in the SEC filings. He also has a few shares of AAPL, plus some options.

If you actually bothered to read the article, you would have learned that the bulk of his wealth comes from his shares of Walt Disney Corporation (proceeds from the sale of Pixar). Steve doesn't need to work. He could probably sit on a beach and rake in $30 million a year in DIS dividends. He doesn't even draw a stipend from being on the board of Disney. They actually had to change the by-laws on his request so he wouldn't get compensation as a non-executive Disney director.

Presumably, Steve has diversified some of his holdings so he isn't reliant on two companies. My guess is that he has some fancy money manager who has him invested in a number of other places, including tax-free munis, perhaps a managed account, and probably a bunch of nice ETFs.

What a weird bar graph... makes 1.4 look like more than half of 6.1

This just in: Steve Jobs is a greedy ass hole.
Not as much as some elected officials.

:) :p :D

I will point out that for the amount that Apple compensates Steve Jobs, they get their money's worth. The guy has been voted as the most valuable CEO by other CEOs.

If you really want to complain, you should go to the other 499 companies not named Apple Inc. in the Fortune 500 rankings and ask them, "Why don't you guys perform like Apple?"

The second question you should ask is "And why are you paying your CEOs so much?"

He also has a few shares of AAPL, plus some options.

You must be delusional if you think that Jobs doesn't have high investments in his own company...

Also, Isn't it about time you brag some more about your stock options???

So, Stevey, want to be friends? :D

These men and woman have done very well for themselves. I coudn't imagine being worth that much. I'm worth about 1/1000th of Stevey.

Steve's AAPL holdings are disclosed in Apple's SEC documents.

I have zero stock options, in any company. Either you have me confused with someone else or you know zilch about the stock market.

Yeah, I'd like to hear what charities Jobs supports... Probably the charity of his own wallet. ;)

Yeah, Bill gave over four times Steves net worth away to himself, but his net worth didnt increase...

the great thing about the bill and milinda gates foundation, is that it is run as a transparent organisation

and its not solely to third world, they gave a large wad of cash into the USA as well...

That's the only thing I dislike about Jobs. I remember when he gave $300 to a charity a couple of years ago it was a news story because a billionaire was giving $300. That's like a millionaire writing a check for 3 cents.

Personally, I don't see how someone of that wealth could not give back. If you have $6 billion, you could give away $5 billion and still have enough for 100 lifetimes.

For a guy to personally be worth $6B is mind boggling.

Even more mind boggling? How much revenue he has overseen at Apple over the past decade.

I know enough not to brag about buying AAPL and apparently selling it before it hits the magical price of 300 which is about to happen.
