If it only has 1000 seats I'm guessing Apple is only going to host announcement events there when they want to invite specific people?

Wonder why only 1000 seating?

1,000 seats is still a lot. Sure, it might not be as big as Moscone or other past auditoriums, but it's not like we're talking a selective bunch here. 1,000 seats accommodates many media outlets.

Fascinating pics. That stage is huge! This article answered a lot of questions I had about access and arrangement. I'm surprised that there's so much wood structure in the theater; I expected more glass and aluminum.

Wood is known for its warm acoustics. Glass and aluminum would give the room a terrible sound profile.

Those $14,000 seats could've been exchanged for $1,000 seats with the $13,000 left over going to an outreach program or charity. Apple/Tim Cook are all about giving other people's money away, but not their own. It's hypocritical and undermines their "we love the world" image.
Did you even read the full article ? The seats did not cost 14k ! Or shalll we extend this analogy to each seat on a jumbo jet costing 5 million :) or the 4 chairs in my house costing 90k each....

so these elevators are like some sort of rotating restaurant ? Sleek...

"only Apple can do this"

Much like their software, they don't mind that many people find unnecessary motion or animation annoying or even sickening.

At least its not VR.

Rotating elevators? $14,000 seats?

Are they really proud to show this? They should be ashamed of putting the money in a theater rather than product development.

Now I understand why the priorities are wrong at APPLE...
Innovation should be for the products, not for a Theater...

It seems like they forgot that the Pro's machine were a complete failure (Mac Pro, Macbook Pro) and the upgrade cycles of all machines are taking much longer (Mac Mini, iMac, iPad, etc)...

So much for product innovation...

This actually is so sad....

I'm surprised there isn't an underground walkway behind the stage that goes back to the main building, so that the executives can go to and from without passing through the audience.
Given Apple cash resources, I'm surprised there is not an underground monorail connecting the theater to Tim Cook's bedroom.

Based on some posts made after yours, it looks like you're going to have to repeat yourself again ... and again ... :D

I wonder how they are going to handle maintenance and the complicated installation of custom elevators. From what I understand, they can be difficult to install and break down really easily (requiring custom parts). The MTA in NYC has had tons of trouble with them.

Since Steve Jobs was vegetarian, don't you think that seats in the Steve-Jobs Theater should be in something else than leather? (maybe they are faux-leather)

...and yet my macbook cant play audio through the speakers if the headphones are plugged in.

Because wood is great for enhancing and containing sound! :)

And that's how Tim will show up:

Grandizer shoot Innnnnn!

Classic anime loved that along with GForce Robotech Dangaurd Ace. Childhood memories :)

Would be awesome that rotating elevator. The rush!

It's a better user experience to have two doors in a lift. Push a wheelchair user in one door. And then directly out the next door. Instead you have to back out or turn around if it's the same door... another sacrifice of UX over design.

I was going to go further to say that for all users of a lift two doors is better, because you don't have to walk in and then turn around. What would have been truly 'Apple' would have been a rotating lift with two doors so although the openings in the lift shaft are on the same side people get the sensation of walking 'through' the lift.

Interesting. One thing that hit me is the emergency egress. I'd like to see how they have exits set up in cases where one (or more was blocked). What is the timing requirement in California for a 1000 person emergency exit?

What kind of emergency occurs in an underground bunker? I would think in case of any actual emergency, an underground bunker is a good place to be.

word salad of the day: "obvious double-door solution"

Not sure what sort of urban environment you're accustomed to (if any) but twin door elevators are exceedingly common. I don't understand your confusion.

I'm surprised there isn't an underground walkway behind the stage that goes back to the main building, so that the executives can go to and from without passing through the audience.

What makes you think there's not?

Even with the descriptions from Bloomberg, I still don't have a clear vision of what it will look like. Well, I'm sure there is Wi-Fi, so, someone will Facebook Live the experience.

Let's just hope Apple engineers have learned after all these years how to limit bandwidth on public Wi-Fi SSIDs vs Private Wi-Fi SSIDs. Jobs should've been ashamed at his staff to even accept what crap thy told him. Kill all access: accept only presentation device MAC addresses and create a new network for public with limited bandwidth. ;) this could've been done back then as well.

Just in case Kim Jong-un strikes

LMAO that was awesome!

I'm shocked there will be separate men's/women's restrooms. Where are trans people supposed to go before the big event? This doesn't seem like a forward thinking design. o_O

Hehe that's the idea - either to confuse them or allow them to choose; basically based on how THEY identify themselves, not segregate.
