Perhaps, but I wonder if we wouldn't be better off as consumers. A lot of people seem to think we would. You can grow a company *and* make cool stuff. Like anything it's a continuum, and lots of people feel Tim Cook took it too far in one direction.
I've observed that many persons' sentiment about this stems from long term MR users who heavily lean on the Mac. They feel neglected & unloved in terms of Apple's R&D focus.

Having said that consumer behavior has changed in their computing.

As of Jan 2024 there are >1.46 billion active iPhone users worldwide.

As of Dec 2023 there are >3.3 billion active Android users worldwide.

As of Apr 2022 there are >1.4 billion active Win10 & Win11 users worldwide.

As of May 2023 there are >0.1 billion active Mac users worldwide.

Apple rightfully placed resources into product lines that the most persons are interested in.

Pre-pandemic worldwide users on desktop & laptops have plateaued for a decade.

More recently smartphone users have plateaued as well.

Steve Jobs likely kept user replaceable memory, storage other parts possible. After his death its soldered.

that’s easy to say in hindsight, at the time the video iPods were very popular despite their tiny screens.
Steve was wrong, the market was right, and he admitted it…by releasing a video iPod in 2005.
That is when people like Tim Cook comes into play.

If the volume's sufficient and parts gets lower priced overtime then future updates are feasible.

By contrast Apple released the iPhone mini as a 12 & 13 model. By 14 model they gave up because it wasn't worth their time relative to more profitable endeavors.

The Mac, 1984 512k helped me start my career. It actually improved my future working in MKt/Ad. Now I'm 62 retired. Everything paid off, 2700 sqft house paid off, cars paid off, my combined retirement income is more than I make which is weird, but I'll take it. lol All because of that little 9" screen to get me started and SJ push to make that thing a reality. So thank you Mr. Jobs.

Only Steve Jobs could have a following like he does with Apple and its customers. I think people who use Apple computers appreciate what he did, but you have to admit…

I just think it starts to get morbid at a certain point… so what, he would have been 69? The fact is he didnt. Loads of people in this world could have been X years old if they hadn't passed away.

I liked watching his keynotes, what he did at Apple and he sure was a gifted leader/showman (i don't know what he was like as a private citizen, and its none of my concern anyhow) but I dont know…

If Steve was still alive I am sure we would have seen better Apple products and he would have never discontinued the iPhone mini!
We will never know... we can never be sure... you could imagine numerous possibilities... Apple doing better, doing worse.. or going under. We will never know. In any case, Apple is a business and in effect it makes and offers what is going to make it money. I love my iPhone mini 13, but they discontinued it. So my next phone... I either buy whatever they offer at that time, or see what other companies are selling.

Reading some of the comment here makes me think some have missed the point, Steve Jobs died young, he made a overwhelming contribution to computing and its right that his legacy (Apple) recognises this each year. We wouldn’t have the gadets we have now without his contribution.

Honestly part of me really wonders if the petty ******* inside Steve groomed Tim Cook to be his replacement, knowing how bereft Tim is of any true inspiring vision. He had to have known Tim would turn the company into the steamy mess it is now. Sure, profit is still great, but the vision seems blurred.
Apple is a business and under Tim Cook they are still the envy of most other companies on the planet. Im sure Steve and whoever else behind the scenes making decisions knew 100% what they were getting with Tim. Tim comes across as a good guy, a stable pair of hands... the problem with trying to get someone 'like' Steve Jobs is that it could end up pretty disastrous, pretty fast. A lot of people with big Visions etc come with a lot of baggage. I feel Tim has one, but keeps it in check.

Many others in computing made contributions that dwarf those of the more popular characters. And they don't get a mention, or a celebration each year.

The really funny thing about the image on this article is that he's holding a phone thats smaller than the iPhone minis of 12 and 13.

Steve was a very hands on product orientated leader and it was all about functionality and simplicity. That iPhone be held in his hand slipped into almost any pocket, and could be used one handed without any strain.

I want that iPhone he is holding 😂

I wonder if Steve Jobs was still alive if we would have ever seen more than one size of the iPhone or iPad. The iPhone mini would have just been the only iPhone. I remember he was adamant in interviews that both were the perfect size. We would have seen thinner but larger and so many options I’m not sure.

Lot of companies these days have got lost down a Rabbit Hole of choice... they try to offer every permutation and option at the expense of just making one device really really well. If you look at the history of iPhone, iPad and now MacBook... there is just at some point an explosion in the number of options or tiers.

I mean look at streaming services.... at one time it was just take it or leave it at a decent price.

Everyone is doing this but at some point it will revert to simplicity when the environmental/servicing and production costs are factored in for maintaining this as the expectation is that devices will either become more easily repairable or just last longer.
