The touchID on my MBP16 has started freezing, physically - when I press it, it 'cracks' and then moves freely for a while before freezing again. While it's loose it sounds like there is something stuck underneath it - it makes a crackling sound.

The machine has been on a stand on my desk for the last several weeks - 99% certain it's not a spill or anything like that.

it still works in that the button functions and the touchid still registers. I've raised a case with apple support who have suggested that as I have plenty of warranty left, I wait until the retail stores reopen. Unless it resolves before then, I'll be taking it back in - just wondering if anyone's heard of or experienced anything similar? I've tried compressed air but it doesn't seem to clear it.

EDIT - it seems if I turn the laptop off and let it cool, the button feels normal - until it gets hot again and then it starts to stick once again.

Returning to this. A week later and I have the same issue. It’s like a ‘cracking’ sound - the power button sticks in the ‘up‘ position and when pushed it cracks and frees itself. It feels like it’s come unboneed somehow - if I apply a little pressure it makes a sort of clicking/crackling sound.

I can’t find any instance of this issue on the web and would really appreciate it if anyone has heard or experienced anything similar with a T2 power button

Looks like old sticky problem with butterfly keyboards. I think you should call Apple. No one will help you with this probably

Took it into apple store today; it’s now in for a new top case under warranty, which will take 5-7 days. Genius said he’d never seen this before. Updating this thread in case it happens to anyone in future.

As an aside, Apple had put a lot of thought into their socially-distanced store setup - it was exemplary. Poles apart from most of the other stores (I struggle to wrap my head around the needs of the 30+ people queueing for Louis Vuitton right now).
