Sticky rubber gasket MacBook Pro 14

Hi everyone,

I've bought an used MacBook Pro 14 M2 Pro

So far so good, the only thing that annoys me is that the rubber gasket that covers the display is a little bit sticky and so when I open the Mac after the lid is closed for some time, it's not a smooth experience, but i need to use a little bit more of force to unstick the lid. If i touch the rubber gasket with the finger I can feel the is a bit sticky and, specifically on the top near the camera, a little bi degraded.

This is not a particular issue but I would like to understand if some of you have encountered this issue and if there is a way to solve it.

I think Apple won't change only the rubber, i saw some replacement parts in Aliexpress or something but i honestly don't know how should i repair this, and given that the issue is not a big deal, i don't want to risk to manually repair and make a worse result.

Is there maybe any product that I can apply on that rubber?

I had this on a brand new MBP about a year ago. Best you can do is try to clean it with some isopropyl alcohol. Anything else, like a thin layer of gasket lubricant would probably work but then you’d have to deal with grease or something I’m sure.

Mine was never fixed before I traded it in.

This happens from natural oils on skin-fingers.. my 2015 MBP had this when I bought it a few years ago. It is annoying. I started to look for the part for it but gave up. I think most of what I found was that you had to replace the entire screen/lid. Not sure how true that was but I've just lived with it.

That is the display clutch gasket getting tacky, pretty common on used 14-inch M2 Pros. The silicone near the camera edge is usually the first part to go, so the lid hangs for a second after it has been closed a while.

Do not put oil, alcohol, or a rubber-restore cream on it. Those either swell the gasket or smear onto the coating. A barely damp microfiber with one drop of dish soap, then a full dry, is usually enough to knock the tack off without replacing anything.

Apple will not replace just the rubber; it is a whole display assembly. For a used machine that otherwise works, I would stop at a light clean rather than an AliExpress strip. Those kits need the display off and it is easy to crease the cable. If it starts leaving residue on the glass itself, that is when I would get an Apple quote, because then you are risking the coating.

Avoid oils or silicone products on the gasket. Gently clean it with a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap. If it is still sticky, the rubber is likely degrading, so replacement is the safest option.

I think I’m going to try with a little bit of dish soap, if it doesn’t work I will live with it given that well it’s not something terrible

It is more sticky if I leave the lid closed for a while. If I open the sticky lid and then immediately close it and reopen it, it is way less sticky. But the if it stay closed for some minutes, then it will be sticky again

Anyway I think that the rubber is degrading, so let’s see, otherwise I will leave like it is now.
