Ok cool. I didn't want to because of the year thing. But too many apps require 9+ now. I'm still on 8.x.

Well, cool or not, if you want to update to IOS 9.3.3, which you have to do first, in order to jailbreak ....well, it wont work, since Apple is not signing 9.3.3 anymore...thought this should be mentioned, in case you are not aware of it.

I thought maybe that was the case. Can't bypass the app signing anymore right?

Ah yeah. Been a while. Now I need to figure out why iTunes won't recognize my iPhone. Something with the phone.

Try clearing the port on the phone. Try another USB cable. Update to the latest iTunes version.
Try on another computer to see if it gets recognized to try to narrow down the problem.

Tried all that stuff. Laptop recognizes my wife's phone but not mine. I've done a fresh install of windows 10 and did all of the other I found on the net. Like stopping / starting the apple device service, manually installing the device driver. I might have to remove all the tweaks by deleting Cydia substrate and see if that works.

Oh ok so it has to be done through the computer then?

Yes. Pangu released a tool for it. I'm not the biggest fan of 9.3.3 jailbreak as it's not perfect. Plus some Cydia apps still don't run on it.

All I want anymore is tether, and it's just occasionally needed.

In my opinion the last great jailbread was the previous one, think it was 9.1. Although that Apple release had some quirky bugs with Apple Wallet not diplaying boarding passes properly.

I just keep an old iPhone 5 on me with iOS 8.4, swap the sim to tether.

As far as I know this still works:

http://www.pgyer.com/TTJB9

-using this guide:

I've tried to use this method twice and it does not work. Currently running 9.2.1 on an iPhone 6s.

It downloads, gets to installing, I flick on Airplane mode and I get 'Unable to Download App' "PP Jailbreak" could not be installed at this time.

There is an option for 'Done' and 'Retry'.

The trick is that you have to hit airplane mode the *instant* it switches from downloading to installing. We're talking less than a second. I found the best way to do this is to invoke control center while it is downloading (you can move the icon to the top of the screen while it downloads so you can still see it with control center invoked). Hover your finger over the airplane icon and tap the instant it switches to installing, and it will work.

Interesting. Okay, I'll give that a shot. I felt like I hit it pretty instantaneously but I'll report back. Thanks!

EDIT - Just out of curiosity, did you have this same issue? Did it take you a couple of tries to get the timing perfect?

I've had to take two or three tries for it to work. My finger hovers less than an inch above the icon and I'm watching it with an eagle eye, ready to pounce! If it doesn't work, delete the icon and start over.

Yeah, I've done it 4 times now lol. Guess I'm just too slow on the trigger. Thanks for the info.

EDIT - Honestly, I can't possibly hit the airplane mode toggle any faster. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a viable option, at least not for 9.2.1 anymore.

Honestly you're probably not fast enough or you have something interfering with the process because I just did this last night on my iPad Pro running 9.3.3. It did take me a couple of times to get it right on time.

If I recall correctly the jailbreak is good for 9.2 as well as 9.3. I've jailbroken at least 10 iPhones so far using this method, and still I don't always get it the first try. You have but a split-second to tap the icon when it switches from downloading to installing.
