Many Android devices have had it, and Apple has even developed an interface that would work perfectly on the iPhone Plus models! Frankly the iPhone interface sucks for driving, even though Siri does help. It would be ideal if every car had CarPlay built-in but of course that's not the case and aftermarket radios including it are expensive.

See the video from June as a reminder: the CarPlay interface could work well on iOS.

I hated 'Car Mode' when I tried it on a Samsung Galaxy device. I'm glad Apple doesn't have that.

So because someone made it badly in your opinion then there's no way anyone can make it a useful feature and good experience. I would love this when driving. My car doesn't have CarPlay.

With all the places that have hands free laws, it's probably not worth the liability to add it in. Regardless of what other makers have done. Plus, they want you to use CarPlay

Agreed, using that while driving could only lead to trouble. Keep your eyes on the road.... :)

I don't see the need, and I agree, with the mishmash of laws and cell phone usage, it would only be a tangled web of issues and headaches for apple.

The point would be to use it when stopped, of course. But it's also optimized for speed: for instance, pressing the phone icon prompts Siri to ask you who to call.

IMO this would be safer than the current system, which is a bit of a hassle for changing songs especially but it could also make navigation more useful. With the many map apps people are already using their iPhones in their cars anyway.

Hated it and honestly see no reason for it. You'll either get a new car with CarPlay or buy and install an aftermarket unit. They're not that expensive.

The aftermarket units are $400+, which is steep for a device that does little more than an iPhone on a dash mount.

I used Carplay in a rental car this weekend and it helped finally push me to go ahead and order an aftermarket unit for my truck.
I am not going to buy a new vehicle just to get carplay so I'll see if this Pioneer AVIC8100NEX will suit me.
To me, the $800 one time cost is so much better than another $1,000+/month truck payment for another 5 years.

Whoa, $1,000+/month payment for 5 years sounds like a lot.

That's one way to look at it if you really want CarPlay. Right now it seems useful to me but not so useful that I'd decide between a new vehicle or an aftermarket CarPlay unit. Hopefully it's standard on all major brands soon since it seems more like a minor selling point to me rather than a deal-breaker.

It's much more than an iPhone on a dash mount. Have you actually used a unit with CarPlay?

The interface is redone for the dashboard, but otherwise the functionality is similar.

To that end I've only seen videos of it in use.

Please, do not drive in front of, behind, or next to, me :)

You wouldn't want that :p.

Though I'm not one of those idiots using a phone while driving. Maybe Siri, but otherwise if I have to touch it it'll be when stopped.

The added bonus is I'm getting an overall better stereo and I won't have to deal with Sync any longer. No one has made the ideal in-car system yet and Sync for me is far ideal, after having it for 5 years I'm ready for a change.

SYNC is horrible, especially its early version models.

I never quite got the logic behind carplay. We have a perfectly nice high quality touchscreen in our phones. The plus models are even rather close to the carplay screen sizes in terms.of visibility. Why on earth do we need what is effectively a peripheral device to use these features? Just seems backwards to me.

Carplay is great; I used it in my friends new vehicle. But it's not $500 great.

How would that work? You enable CarPlay on your phone, it disables apps that aren't CarPlay approved, people freak out that their apps have disappeared; since it would not be fully integrated with the vehicle people would be constantly messing with the phone causing safety issues. There are so many valid reasons.

There isn't a whole lot about carplay that you couldnt just emulate on the screen itself; actually there isn;t anything you couldn't just emulate. I am not really sure what you mean about messing with the phone. Enter carplay mode. And... done. Exit when you leave your vehicle. People can already mess with their phones if they choose to do so by disabling carplay and using their phone in the care like we have been all along... plugged into a cigarette lighter. Further, Android already has this feature and it's rather great. I really don't hear of people having all kinds of issues with how Android has implemented it. All carplay is is a really simplified UI broadcast on an external screen. I am suggesting they allow it to be broadcast on the iPhone itself, as is being done in this video.
