There's ipods everywhere. ipod users use itunes. itunes default ripping format is AAC. most users never change the defaults. Therefore, we can safely assume that AAC is used a lot. most likely it's used more than ogg and flac combined, tho I dont have numbers to back it up :p. sosumi

This has caused me many problems, too.

I wish the default would be MP3...

Or maybe MS should just pay to licence AAC.

· For a consumer (non-commercial) decoder product: $0.50 to $0.12 (volume-based)
per channel
· Royalty rates for PC-based software decoder products are $0.25 per channel, up

That was actually the first place I looked, before posting here, but that site was so flipping confusing, and then the steps required to install seemed like a hassle. (maybe it only required one step, but their site didn't make it seem that way!) Finally, some comments on their own message board led me to think I'd have to go through several more steps to get the files to show up in WMP.

ANYWAY, it turns out RealPlayer is allowed, and it plays AACs, so I'm just going to use that. Should have thought of Real in the first place.

Vista can't even read the tags from .AAC files, how lame
