Is it possible to create a still photo in iphoto from a frame of a rented dvd?

You can easily grab a frame from a DVD and make it a picture, but you don't need iPhoto to do it. You also can't use Apple's DVD Player application, because screen grabs are locked out.

You will need to download VLC. It's free and you can find the latest version at VersionTracker.com.

Use VLC to play the DVD in question. Get to the frame that you want to capture. Pause the DVD. Use the screen grab function (or hit shift-Cmd-3 or one of those keycombos).

There will be a pdf file on the desktop. Open the PDF file in Preview and save it as a jpg or whatever file format you want.

Yep, that hotkey works great. For other needs, you can also use cmd-shift-4 to select an area you want to take a picture of. Highlight it with the cursor and then it will appear on your desktop as well. :cool:
