Other watch options than Apple and Samsung. What about Garmin? They make awesome watches.

Garmin makes excellent hardware quality with their smart watches, where they struggle is their software. It’s been a known fact for quite some time that the software tends to lag, can be inconsistent with software updates and generally just does not perform as well as watchOS for the Apple Watch.

But if you’re serious marathon runner or do triathlons of any of that type of sort, Garmin offers quite a few different variables for exercise components. Also, Garmins battery life is generally very good, but it’s also a very large watch, which obviously encloses a larger battery.

I had a Galaxy Watch with an S10 and there simply wasn’t the same amount of thought put into the software on the Galaxy Watch.

Here’s a good example: Music playback. On the Apple Watch I can look at my wrist while music is playing to see what’s playing (I don’t always know who the artist is because I download lots of suggestions), adjust the volume, like/dislike a song by going one tap deeper, very quickly. The time stays on the screen so I can still tell the time all the time.

With the Galaxy Watch, I had to go two taps in from the now playing screen to adjust the volume and then back to see what was playing, and there was no way of telling the time without leaving the now playing screen.

They seem like small things, but the Apple Watch makes these small interactions easy and intuitive in a way the Galaxy Watch doesn’t.

That checks with everything I'm seeing. It's kind of like the iPhone compared to Android back in the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 timeframe. It was a year or two ahead of everything else. Android Wear and Samsung's watch OS are catching up but still a year or two behind right now.

Design wise they are behind too. I was looking at the Galaxy Wear Active and it's like twice as thick as the Apple Watch.

If I recall correctly, the Galaxy watch was designed to be manufactured ‘thicker’, being Samsung wanted to create the notion that someone was purchasing something with a ‘weightiness’ to it . So that specific ideation of the galaxy watch being heavier was likely intentional, which is one of the reasons why some like the stainless model watch, because it does have a nice weight to it.

I had an iPhone before I had an Apple Watch. So the AW is a moot point. It does however, supplement the iPhone nicely.

I switched from BB to Android and back to BB. Once the IPhone 6+ came out, that was all she wrote. I’d been using iPads since the first week they came out, so I knew what I was getting into. Currently on AW 4, iPad Pro. 12.9 (USB C), and 8+. Google can shove Android for all I care.

I’m in a similar boat. However, are you sure you don’t just love smart watches, not necessarily the Apple Watch? The galaxy watch looks like it does nearly everything the Apple Watch does. There are plenty of other options for watches that work with android phones.

As is always true, ticking off a list of bullet-list items doesn't necessarily mean execution/performance will be on a par with the competing product.

Part of the power of product ecosystems is that not all components of the ecosystem need to be "best," but that all components be good enough to not alienate the customer. It may take just one "beloved" ecosystem component to keep someone in the fold, so long as the rest are sufficient. For one person that might be Watch, another iPhone, iPad, AirPods... The fact that all of those products have been cited as "the one thing that keeps me in the Apple ecosystem" suggests that the overall product quality levels are quite good. As in romance, the reasons for falling (or not falling) in love are quite varied, and we don't all fall in love with the same person.

Let's face it, the same is true within families - we have our favorite family member(s) who makes otherwise tedious or unpleasant family gatherings tolerable. (Now, families are far "stickier" than the stickiest product ecosystem - while we wouldn't likely abandon family if there was no tolerable family member, it certainly could affect how many family events we attend.)

whats funny to me is the only thing i wanted the watch for was to have a dick Tracey (or power rangers) qnotification tone on my wrist. I've been waiting and waiting ---- but so far the only personal use I've found with watch is the turn vibrating with maps

i am 100 percent fine with admitting I only wear my watch for vanity. i literally have no use for it as i already hate jewelry. i do want to learn how to use it for activity though. its a feature i have not played with and have turned off. i do love it now that I have full functionality back with FirstNet service but the one thing i only ever wanted from it the watch does not yet do and that's to have personal tones .

i think its great for a lot of stuff but not having it fully work independent of iPhone is so painfully Apple

I thought answering a phone call on a watch would be silly but I do it all. the. time.

With activity I was shocked at how long I was remaining seated at my desk job. I love that it tells me to get up after 50 minutes. Keeping track of how much you're walking/exercising is great and it's also been a great way to encourage family members (we have our activity tied together).

yeah it would be cool if i had someone to tie it with. i can't even get anyone to use walkie with me lol

I've been wearing my AW like a crazy person since I purchased it and to be honest this month I went back to switching it up with my mechanical watches. It did help re-instill good fitness habits in my daily life but in some ways I began to feel to dependent on it. I would wake up in the middle of the night and feel the need to start closing rings. Lol!!! I feel like it's managing my life and not the other way around. While the iPhone is not what it once was, its still does what I need it to do very well.

Well if you truly love the Apple Watch then I imagine you’ll learn to put up with whatever shortcomings you see with the iPhone instead of opting for a younger, tighter, model.

With watchOS 6 allowing apps to be downloaded on the watch and developers to write standalone watch apps, I won’t be surprised if watchOS 7 will only require the user to have an Apple ID/iCloud account. No smartphone required. Just offload the data to a computer through Bluetooth.

As Smartphone season kicks off a thought occurred to me that I've struggled with over the last two years with iPhone updates. Today in 2019 I feel I am still using an iPhone only because of my love/necessity for using the Apple Watch. So I am curious, how many of you feel you are still on iPhone because of your utilization/love for the Apple Watch only?

I would say it’s half the reason I’m still with an iPhone, although my XR has grown on me I have to say as it’s damn fast and smooth.
But I’ve always loved my Apple Watch, and as it has become a bit of a necessity for health reason I love my new Series 4 as much as my Series 1!
The way it all integrates together is fantastic especially the health app on the iPhone!
