Stm Alley Bag --- ?? Just okay..
After a lot of serious online (and soul) searching for a great laptop bag, I went ahead decided to through down 40 bucks for this simple bag. Though I love walking around looking like a bike messenger, I wanted a vertical bag, and one that could be used in a professional job-like environment. I have an incase backpack that is very well designed, but I'm not sure I want to look like a student either... plus many days I only need my laptop and maybe a folder, pens, moleskin notebook, and a good read. This bag was the perfect fit for a minimal amount of goods to transport, and looks pretty nice one you ditch the stupid cell phone/ipod case attachment thingy (which does not fit sunglasses). Nice form factor... It's simple form, sleek ballistic (and slightly reflective) material, obtrusive but not in-your-face logo placement... The gray one looks great with a black jacket, or on a naked girl. The brown one sort of looks like... brown.
Let's face it, this bag hangs well and the shoulder pad is both comfy and stays put over long walks. The bag also doesn't bounce around with every step causing chaffing and joint pain, and making the user look like a complete fool. The hardware on the bag isn't too bad. I love the outside vertical zip pocket (although I wear on my left shoulder, it could be positioned on the other side), and pretty nice rotational strap clips. Despite the handle being styled like the terminator and looking like it was ganked off an 8 dollar walmart bag, it seems to be quite handy to have there and very nice not-so-cheap-feeling-plastic. The handle does however fall to your body side of the bag, and kind of gross and obtrusive on this minimalist bag. Overall, excellent value, nice materials, and at first, a seemingly not-too-shaby design.
Unfortunately, this bag does have a few errors in it's design. One is, I could ask for a little snugger fit for my 13' macbook, but I know apple doesn't make the bag, a tighter fit would just feel better. It's very well padded, with a 1/4" inch impact foam, however this padding seems to be lacking in the corners, and the key ring is in a not-so-convenient place. And one more thing, if you wear this bag out in the rain, you make destroy your 1500.00 laptop.
You see STM, although printing "protecting your digital cargo" right on the front of every back, has made a fatal design error. They don't offer any protection from water leaking in the top corners of the bag... it's just open space. I'm not sure how much it rains down-under, but another major Australian bag manufacturer Crumpler has managed to solve the problem by incorporating an internal seam that shields watershed into the bag... so when you open the flap there is a big nice curve that gets tucked in when you close it again, rather than a 90 degree angle. Now Crumpler only need to make bags aren't for circus clowns.
Nevertheless, this bag requires some kind of post market modification. Maybe STM intended this to be some sort of air venting solution, but it simply seems like a grave design flaw. So, did i place the bag directly on ebay and pick up an Incase vertical sling canvas surplus bag? Jack Spade? The Timbuk2 Blogger or Hacker like everyone else? Move into the leather market? No... I just check the weather before I leave the house, and keep a plastic bag buried in the bag pocket for emergency use. I think a lot of those other bags are common and all have an element of cheesyness that STM simply doesn't have, they also all cost twice as much.
So let's just call this bag a 3.49 out of 5... Maybe next time STM.
