Hi folks, to keep a long story long, my friend is traveling abroad and her iPhone was pickpocketed in Paris this morning.

She’s traveling with girlfriends, and messaged me on one of her girlfriend’s phones that her phone was missing. She asked me to use find my iPhone to locate and or erase it (she’s in my family with Apple).

I did so, and noticed that her phone hadn’t squawked out a location since about 5 hours earlier, and was apparently turned off. She and I had corresponded via text message on the phone probably about 30 to 45 minutes before it went missing. I wasn’t able to reach the phone, regardless.

I also noticed that where it used to be labeled “*****’s iPhone”, it now said “iPhone (63)” instead. This was probably 20 - 30 minutes after she noticed it missing.

Obviously, at this point the phones a write-off. My question is why was the name different? Is that some sort of glitch with international travel, or did someone manage to change the name on the phone before shutting it down? It’s a 13 of some sort.

Thanks for any insight!

I've seen that format in my own devices when I set something up as new on my account. Since a lot of devices come with generic names and most people don't venture into that part of settings to change the name, it adds that number to distinguish between backups.

How can they change the phones name when I'm assuming there is a passcode? asking for myself
