The other possibility is that whoever took the phone is merely an opportunist who will sell it on eBay as "faulty" because it's blacklisted. It happens all the time. If you look at damaged phones on eBay, around 50% will simply be blacklisted stolen devices, often sold to people abroad.
All anyone on MR can do is speculate of course, but if it's just being sold on eBay by an opportunist they probably will do a wipe first. But if you really are that concerned about your data you should have put a password on it in the first place.
