    Hi All,

Bad news to report. My MBA was stolen from my apartment in Sydney, Australia. When I filed the police report, I made sure to give them the serial number but I'm not too confident in a recovery. The worst thing about it is the lack of a recent backup. I'm a university student and I lost almost all of my notes from this semester including pending assignments.

Just a reminder to everyone to install security software and backup often! Also, it would be a good idea to hide the backup HD somewhere good so the thief won't take that too.

    The serial number is W881231KY51.

    Cheers,

    :apple: Mike :apple:

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Best wishes in recovering it in perfect condition.

My MBA was stolen recently, I lost valuable data also. The worst part is my backup drive was taken too.

    Best wishes.

I ran after the thief and recovered my MBA with a dent on one corner. But it works fine.

Commiserations on the theft of your MBA; that's a rotten thing to happen to you, and also you have my sympathy on your stolen class notes. Best wishes in recovering it in perfect condition.

    Cheers and good luck

Bring your police report and serial to apple genius bar so they can add the info under the serial.

When I lost mine, I tried doing that. But Apple don't keep track of stolen Mac.

    Too bad.

Sorry to hear about your Air. I suggest everyone I know to turn on Firmware Password. I know it's not a sure bet, but it's another step for the theif or stolen goods buyer to overcome.

Students, please use mozy to back up your notes, past assignments and etc to it. I seen horrible thing where students lose their files.

A grad student lost their research to a hard drive crash. Sad that he paying a huge amount of money for grad school and did not care to do any kind of back up.

As for your air, im sorry. It sucks to not have your air. Check craiglist or pawn shop to see where it might end up.

I lost about three months worth of work when backed up everything to AirPort Extreme Base Station backup drive. Problem was when MBA was stolen from home office, so was the backup drive attached to the AEBS. I had purchased MBA several months prior, and I had backed up everything to DVDs before transferring data. Bottom line is that backup storage devices/disks also need to be guarded and stored in separate location from Mac.

Luckily, it didn't really seem as bad in the end as it initially felt. At first, I was devastated and thought ruined for certain (for consulting work), but with files emailed and etc to my assistant/clients, 90% of important work was recovered. More than anything, it was all a great big hassle.

I checked Craig's List often. I was more interested in getting back data than anything. I actually posted a reward for $1000 for the hard drive from my stolen MBA/or the backup drive, with no questions asked on where the MBA/Macs ended up or etc. I even offered to buy back MBA and all tech stuff for a premium. Would have been wrong for sure, but the data was critical for me. I really wouldn't have called the police or anything, as I just wanted the nightmare to end.

Anyways, yes everyone be aware of backups and how to recover in case of disaster via theft, fire, in the worst situations, or even a crashed drive if not backed up from Mac to other device.

This is why I also backup using JungleDisk to Amazon S3. I'm paranoid about theft or a fire here. I prefer Jungledisk because you can specify your own encryption key and you only pay for the bandwith / space you use. I've heard good things about Mozy too.
