Like I previously mentionned, remove the HD, buy a new one and a 29$ Snow Leopard DVD(heck you can even torrent it, it's DRM free with no CD-Key) and voilà, the PreyProject program has been rendered useless and is money down the drain.

True, but that assumes the thief is smart enough to know that something like Prey is even installed on it in the first place - and I would wager that that's a pretty big assumption.

I have a buddy who's MBP got stolen and he had Prey on it. He showed me the logs and data that Prey would send back. Showed everything the thief was doing online, his IP address, even pictures of him from the webcam. Sad part is that even despite all that info, the police didn't seem interested in going after the guy.

Ummm, most pet chips are RFID tags. They only work when an RFID scanner is scanned over them within a few feet. What you are discussing is a "lojack". First off, they would have to be powered in order to transmit and receive a signal at all times. This would mean your battery of your laptop would constantly drain. Secondly, this is not a "cheap" solution. Is it expensive? No. But at $50-100 per device you are adding quite a bit of cost. Third, space. I don't know if you have ever opened a laptop but there's not a lot of room in there.

Frankly, the real "solution" is buying an lock for your dang laptop and putting it away when you have "company".

Seriously blaming other people and/or companies for your own error is what is wrong with the world today. Grow up and man up.

It was out of frustration, it wasn't blaming people or a company. Never did I not claim this not to be my fault. Nor did I ever look for sympathy.

It was a simple question. I wasn't serious and never expect this to be a feature. Sorry.

How about monitoring your local Craigslist for postings? Were there any distinctive marks on your MBP that could help you prove its identity? Any tattoos or birth marks, for instance? :p

But seriously, sorry about your MBP. To those blaming the victim, you're not helpful. He's not to blame, the thief is. But sure, be more careful next time! (And I'm sure you will).

My MacBook already had snow leopard, so the perp is out of luck there!

Can you tell Apple and give them your serial # and just have it blacklisted? Does that work?

lol rave night, awesome! haha

Yes rave night is awesome!

Thanks, and I cant remember of any significant things that would make it stick out other then a sticker then I'm sure is long gone, but may have left a clean square mark!

Stolen out of my house, but no insurance or anything. Messed up living situation. And I don't have any suspects :(.

Man, that sucks.
Btw, I bought my MBP from a guy right outside your house. Only $100!
Jk... But seriously, find your serial number and report it stolen. Apple may be able to blacklist it from future updates, repairs, etc...

I hate thieves! I feel your pain!

My question is, does anybody who have undercover have a successful story about their MBP being recovered? Or any legit program?

Don't criticise me, I bought undercover just to be safe, and also a keyed laptop lock.

that's was legitimate thought. Many people think when they install apps like undercover or lojack that it somehow hooks into the bios/efi and can survive anything short of complete disassembly and reflash. The vendors don't make this obvious.

Actually, Dell's use Computrace baked into the bios on their laptops. Once enabled it can't be turned off.

I didnt say it couldn't be done, just that all currently available Mac recovery apps offer the less intensive software only solution .

I can help you find it, all I need:

your SSN, License number and you mother's maiden name. Your bank account number would be handy as I have a friend in Nigeria that could really help you out financially. We can meet and have drinks that I, and only I supply. After that we can go back to your place and clean out your power outlets with any random table utensil.

After you wake up (from your drug induced stupor) and realize that leaving out a tasty bit of tech like a MBP was an idiot move, you will concede defeat and buy another. Or not. I don't really care.
