I can't Apples archive Utility to behave that like either. But you can use Keka for the task. It has a service in the secondary click menu to compress files with it.

Keka is free in the App Store, if I remember correct.

thanx; i also have 'the unarchiver'. figure this is just broken in archive utility, since it's happening on both my macs...

Were you lucky enough to get the version thats send your browser history to China? Trash it. Everything you need to unarchive zip files is provided my macOS.

hmm. i want my history sent to china. meanwhile, i actually haven't used 'the unarchiver' in years, so... off to the trash. thanx

EDIT: just read that article, and i don't see any mention of 'the unarchiver'. so... ??????????

Perhaps not the most elegant solution but you could always perform your archiving operations via the terminal. This would enable you to avoid the issue described.

Code:
zip destination_archive.zip source_file

a good idea. prob will just deal with it, since the contextual menu option is so... direct. plus, if i zip a file on the desktop, there's no problem, seems to only happen if you zip a file already in a folder; once it's zipped, a new window opens. pointless (for me, anyway)

o_O I read it and found no references either...

Ok guys. I accept responsibility for bad info regarding the Unarchiver. My point was that none of these third party utilities are necessary.

i got a file from someone (on a windows machine) a few years back that wouldn't open; he insisted the file was fine (a large file as well). i installed 'the unarchiver' and it opened the file without an issue.

but i really don't use it much.
