i started encrypting an external drive today (right-clicked the drive in the sidebar, selected 'encrypt'). now, am having second thougthts. is there any way to stop the process? or do i have to wait for it to finish, then i can chose to decrypt.
haha, thanks for all the replies . took 3 full days, but both my externals are encrypted. i can work normally, but if i eject them, i need the password to (re)access my stuff. which is fine. and am back in business. and all is well (or well enough).
and simple enough to right-click and select 'decypt drive' if i ever decide to do that.

😄😄😄 .....I'm looking for the same answer too. Done quite a bit of Googling with no luck so far! I decided it was a bit of overkill for a home computer - especially once I saw it had moved about 0.003" on the progress bar overnight! So thought abort the process....easy enough I thought...erm, nope! Just wish a warning had popped up first saying just how long it would take to complete... 🙄
i like that the drives are encrypted. sure, 3 days is a long time, but i appreciate it when i reboot my mac and the externals ask for a password (just once, while my mac's on). for me, it was worth it.
