I found out iMessages from my phone were going to my ex's iPad, so I created a new Apple ID and associated it with my iMessage account, along with other key accounts, such as iCloud and iTunes. Just to be sure, in my phone settings, under Messages/Send and Receive, I checked only MY phone number. It seems like this would be sufficient, but some sites suggest also removing my number from the iPad. Well, that's not going to happen. My ex has that iPad and of course would love to see my iMessages. Is there anything else I should do to be ABSOLUTELY SURE my messages aren't going to that iPad, without me having access to the iPad itself? One t hing that's kind of scaring me is the "Forward Messages To" feature has disappeared from my settings. In the Message section, it simply isn't there ... so I can't check to see whether any numbers or email addresses other than my own are checked off there.

If it is still under your icloud account so you can track her.. do a remote wipe :)

No, my ex was the primary iCloud and Apple ID account holder for the whole family. I created my own new ones for my iPhone and associated them with everything in my phone ... Messages, Facetime, etc. I tried logging into the original account to see what phone numbers are associated with the iPad and remove mine if checked ... but since I am not the primary account holder, a two-point authentication code (which is sent to my ex's phone) is needed to enter the account settings. Very frustrating. I'm sure this happens to people all the time. There MUST be a way to keep my messages off of other devices. Hopefully what I've done is enough. I'm just trying to make sure that 1.) it isn't really necessary to do anything from the iPad, as well, since I've created a whole new Apple ID and iCloud account, 2.) I'm not missing any steps or buried settings in my phone, and 3.) Where the heck did the "Forward messages to" item in the settings menu go??? I am certain it was right by "Send and receive" before.

There should be a couple ways to do this.

If you have an ios device, go into the settings and at the top select your Apple ID. from there, you should see the devices that are associated with the account. If you see the device listed (the one you want to remove) select it and click on REMOVE from account.

Alternatively, I think it can be done at this site. https://appleid.apple.com/#!&page=signin you have to have the associated apple ID and password to get in.

If it's just imessage you are concerned about, in your iphone (or other primary ios apple ID device) if you go down to imessage, you should be able to scroll down to "receive messages at these addresses" and your apple ID is listed there. DE-SELECT the apple ID and it won't go to devices that are receiving only at those addresses.

Of course, changing the password is probably in order regardless.

Did all that. Sounds like I've covered all the bases. Thanks!

Send outrageous stuff to fake number so that she would surely reply if she sees them. Stuff like "dude, did you know that (ex) is a stripper on the weekends" Or "just got back from the doctor, they say I've got less than a month to live"...just kidding... kinda

Haha! I actually did that. Nothing that outrageous, but I did send a fake message to a friend that I thought sure would get a reaction from the ex ... And it did not, so I think I'm safe!

Thanks for the info, also. I brought my old iPad to work to use for podcasts and was distressed to see my private messages coming up on that for all to see! Luckily, I'm boring.

The OP may have solved this problem, but for the record make sure you check your iMessage forwarding settings in Settings.

I' pretty sure it applies to iMessage, BUT it may only apply to devices on your Apple ID (so, not your ex, probably). Need coffee...
But if the iPad is logged into the Apple ID, there would be no need to forward iMessages, only SMS.

iMessage doesn’t get forwarded from the iPhone. It is delivered from Apple servers directly.
