Hello all

Those of you who shoot 4K video with cameras or camcorders, how do you keep your files safe when travelling?

I know there's the option of shooting on parallel SD cards and just bring enough of those, but if one wants to use an external drive instead, what should one get?

It may sound odd, but I'm still using a 11" Macbook Air (2015). It's light, small and powerful enough on the road because I only edit at home. The Air has USB 3.0, and I'd like to use that as intermediary between card reader and enclosure.

A while back, and bit for fun, I built my own external drive using a USB 3.0 mSATA enclosure and a Samsung PM851. I know, old tech but I wanted to try it. In my view it's fast, for instance a 4GB file transfers in <20 seconds. The problem, though, is that the enclosure has a habit of randomly disconnecting.

I am attracted by the idea of building my own storage solution with a fast drive, but the enclosure needs to be reliable.

All this said, I'd be interested in hearing what you use in situations like this, thanks in advance.

"Looks quite good. Have you used it yourself?"

I have a 1tb x9 that as use as an external boot drive for my 2018 Mac Mini.
Works fine.
It's actually got my "experimental copy" of Sequoia on it (I still have the old Mojave OS installed on the Mini's internal SSD).

It gives reads in the 900MBps range.
Also it's very small.

Oh that sounds very good indeed, that's definitely a good speed. I saw some photos of it and it is positively tiny, which is very handy. Thank you very much again for having pointed me towards it and shared your experiences with it.
