Fair enough, but if someone is just using it as a streaming box for basic apps (Netflix, HBO, Hulu, I would probably recommend a much cheaper, and in some ways better ATV3.

One of the best things about having tvOS is the huge app library available. One of the biggest downsides of tvOS (imo) when compared to the ATV3 is the version of apps.
No way. ATV 3 doesn’t support 4k hdr, nor has any way to play files from a NAS. (Not to mention upcoming Atmos support). Its a pretty bad choice as a streaming box today.

Well, then you are not talking about a basic streaming box anymore, at least imo.

If you didn't need 4K, and just needed basic streaming apps (like Netflix, Hulu, HBO), I think the ATV3 would be a good, cheap choice due to the quality of the apps, and the stability of the OS.

It is really easy to set up, has a decent selection of apps to use, and less than half the price of the cheapest ATV4, which is also not 4K.

If being used as a basic streaming box, the only thing I miss would be the Siri feature.

What about being able to use my tv to its fullest resolution and color range isn't basic? Netflix has some the most and best 4k hdr content out there. Amazon Prime also has some.

Also don't forget Infuse - there is a reason it is one of the most popular paid apps for the AppleTV.

I think in your case then maybe the ATV3 might not be the best choice. Especially if you value 4K and HDR.

But, many people still don't have a 4K tv to benefit from it. Even if they do have a 4K tv, many people in the US have data caps with their ISPs, so streaming in 4K might not be ideal.

So, for those people, it comes down to cost and the user experience, and I think that the ATV3 has a much better user experience when it comes to the basic streaming apps.

I personally don't consider infuse a basic streamer app.
