The iPod Nano 5G came in 8GB and 16GB configurations, and it was mainly for music. The Apple Watch also has apps, so it shouldn't came won't came with less than 8GB and probably with a 16GB configuration available.

Storage Options? What do you think?

I also think the watch will only have 8 gigs of non upgrade able storage. If the storage is gonna be for only music there is no reason to have more then that.

While I also think the only option will be 8GB, don't forget the native apps that will be coming at some point in 2015. They will also require space, although probably only small amounts.

Okay, so you think they will all be the same storage size, but there might be a $50 premium for the larger watch?

Possibly yes.

To my understanding this app data will be stored on the iPhone the watch will be paired with.

my guess is they won't even advertise the storage in the watch since the storage in the phone is what mainly matters here. you will be able to load apps til your hearts content but they aren't going to say it has X gb.

No, because native apps will run on the watch. It's only the 'views' that we have with current apps for Apple Watch that are stored on the phone.

The iPod Shuffle has 2GB, but that also has to hold the OS.

The Watch will have a larger OS plus apps, so I suspect a minimum of 4GB standard.

But there are size constraints, but SD cards hold up to 512GB.

I don't know if they can get away with the same tech as SD cards, but I suspect they can.

In any case, they want the Sport to work for joggers without the iPhone, and they seem to think for that purpose, the Shuffle's 2GB is enough, but the OS and apps will be bigger, so a minimum of 4GB. So it may start there.

Not necessarily. The iPod Nano is also targeted to joggers, and it has 8GB/16GB options.

The apps are obviously stored in the watch, and given how cheap flash memory is these days I doubt Apple is going to constrain app development for the Watch with small storages.

Nope, they will be native apps. The word 'native' gives it away. These will launch at some point this year.

Initially, when the Apple Watch is first released, you are correct, it will all be store on the iPhone. But this will change.

Well **** I didn't know that. Can you please provide a link so I can reeducate myself? :)

Based on the latest "Apple Retail Watch Sales" leak it seems all the watches will have the same storage considering its not even a question required to be asked by the sales associate when helping the customer choose a watch.

thats why i don't think they would do storage options, its all going to be 4gb or 8gb, probably 8gb though.

do you think sizing will have different pricing?

or will it be standard $349 for Watch Sport, $499 Apple Watch and $1999 and up for Edition, regardless of size?

I could see a larger price point because of more materials. I think people will feel cheated if they get the smaller version at the same price. It will be interesting to see pricing.

I wonder if I can "special order" a combo that isn't listed. Ie silver alum. case with black sport band or will I need to purchase the black sport band separately.

I would guess that it will come with at least 4 GB standard, seeing as all Android Wear watches come with that much preinstalled. I would like to see a little more storage, such aas 6 or 8 GB in a watch, especially because of all the cool apps Apple will have for the watch.

Not necessarily. The iPod Nano is also targeted to joggers, and it has 8GB/16GB options.
(Speculation warning goes here, obviously...)

Apple historically tends to underdeliver on storage, both long- and short-term storage. iPhones still have only 1GB RAM, while some Android devices come as standard with 4. Apple sold phone models with a paltry 8GB flash, and iPad can be had with 16. That's NOT a lot, unless you basically don't use apps.

Now, the Watch is meant to be tethered to an iPhone, but it can work standalone too, such as when you go for a jog, Apple's website suggests. How much space for music do you need for a jog, 8GB? 16? Probably not, right? Or you could pull a Forest Gump and run across a continent a couple times without hearing the same tune twice. :)

The space for music will probably be fairly limited I'm thinking, considering the device is meant to be tethered and only used untethered for shorter periods of time. NAND flash also consumes space, which is at an extreme premium in a device like :apple:Watch. All factors being the same, a larger flash device takes up more board space than a smaller. Certain technologies such as PoP/interposer/through-via chip stacking and so on can reduce that, but will take up more space vertically instead.

Larger capacity flash dies are also more expensive, and we all know Apple loves their profit margins.

"Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch."

It will be very interesting to see what happens to the battery then.

By then batteries won't probably be as new and fresh as they are on launch day, then perhaps a couple of hundred recharge cycles later we get fuller apps that use the watch hardware more, and perhaps with the screen on for longer.

One would think this would not be good.

I know that the battery will degrade over time, but it won't degrade that fast. Remember the new technology that Apple put in the MacBooks, that stop the battery from taken in charge after 100%, to prevent over charging. Same thing in the Apple Watch I think.

Personally, I think it'll be 8GB standard, no upgrade options.

Otherwise it's far too many SKU's, in something that is complicated enough as it is.

Currently it's
10 Sport Models
18 Regular
6 Gold

That's 34 SKU's at the moment. With storage options, there could be 68 or even 102 SKU's which is far too complicated.

maybe they'll go the way of michele watches and sell the band separately. so you choose your watch model, sport, regular, gold, then you choose the band....

still a lot of SKUs.... but probably a lot easier to purchase....

When did this happen? I had a 2011 MacBook Pro that was nearly always plugged in and that definitely shortened the battery's life within a year.
