Storage space disappearing?

I got a Macbook Pro early 2015 and I noticed my available storage space has decreased by 5-7 GB over the last few weeks even if I did not install or save anything new on it. How is that possible?

Also, if I look at the storage allocation in "About my mac" I see that over 3GB is taken by pictures, but all my pictures are on an external drive, I counted the space taken by the odd pictures physically on the laptop and it is less than 100MB.

I tried re-indexing the drive (or whatever it is called) but things did not change.

    Any clue what is happening?
    Thanks!

That is normal. Once you start using a new Mac is begins using some disk space of cache files and also creates a swap file that is about the size of the RAM installed. Also, if you have Time Machine turned on, some space will be used for Time Machine local snapshots.

On the second issue with the photos, just ignore that storage readout as it is completely messed up, particularly on Yosemite and El Capitan. For example, I have 9GB of photos and that thing shows I have 1.3GB of photos.

Thanks but my mac is not new at all, been using it for one year and local snapshots are disabled.
