I believe apple already uses 64 chip in the iphone 4s as there is no room for two chips. They could use their massive buying power to secure lower costs for it. However, apple might not need to have 128 option as the changes that are already a given for ipad 3 are big enough to stay at the top of the charts.

well they could introduce a fourth model, wich has 128gb, although i dont see that happen, id pay 100 dollar more :D

If they do introduce a 4th model, and if they don't drop the 16GB down to $399, then the 128GB would be $100 more. It would be just like when the 64GB iPhone came out, it was $100 more.

What I hope they do is this, granted costs are low enough:
$399 - 16GB iPad 2
$499 - 32GB iPad 3
$599 - 64GB iPad 3
$699 - 128GB iPad 3

But if the iPhone was anything to go by, it'll look like this:
$499 - 16GB iPad 3
$599 - 32GB iPad 3
$699 - 64GB iPad 3
$799 - 128GB iPad 3

Then again...having 4 models seems excessive. So either they do my first example, or they don't change anything at all.

I already thought the numerous iPad 2 models were excessive. If I'm right, there were 18 models: 3 Wifis, 6 3g models, all in either black or white. Adding 6 x 128gb models wouldn't be totally crazy.

Yeah I could see that. To me, its pretty clear that Apple will keep selling the iPad 2, most likely at a $399 price point.

iPad 2 16 GB $399
iPad 3 32 GB $499
iPad 3 64 GB $599
iPad 3 128 GB $699 (maybe?)

....

I think this could be very much was Apple is going to do... - Would be very obvious looking at the iPhone pattern :)

I think they will continue iPad 2 for the 'School' market as they want iPad to be the new 'textbook'. If I were Apple I would do this:

iPad 2 16 GB $299 (WiFi only)
iPad 2 32 GB $399 (WiFi only)

iPad 3 32 GB $499
iPad 3 64 GB $599
iPad 3 128 GB $699

It would also give Apple an advantage over Amazon an B&N. It would add untold millions of iTunes accounts.

@gpiney
If you were Apple, you wouldn't have accumulated boatloads of cash that way :D
Apple is not that generous. They'll sell millions of iPads at the current price. A $300 16gb iPad2 is pretty much giving it away and begging people to buy it. They don't need to beg.

How Apple treats the emerging educational market will be interesting but I don't think $300 16gb iPad 2 is their answer.

I respect your opinion, but I think we are a long ways away from a $300 iPad. Unless Apple releases an iPad mini or something with 8 GB, smaller screen, no cameras, slower a4 processor, etc. I think they can drop the 16 GB iPad 2 down to $399 to keep selling it, maybe even $349, but $299 is still a ways off.

Boy I wish that tablets were more like laptops, where we could buy our own memory modules and install them ourselves at or own expense. Then this discussion would be moot.

Certainly the 64 GB chips EXIST in quantity, since they are in an iPhone 4S version. It's just a matter if Apple decides it wants to give us a 128 GB OPTION with the iPad 3. If they don't, then it's imposible for us to get it even for those of us willing to pay a relatively hefty premium for it.
