Storing movies made on the iPhone

Please help me run my collection more efficiently. I think I could have duplications and triplications of my shot footage. I have films on my iPhone, the same in iphotos after syncing which is stored on my int h/drive and also within iTunes which is on my ext h/drive. If I then edit and compile within iMovie I seem to lose even more room on my hard drive as another version is made.
What should I do within preferences please?
