I am on Catalina 10.15.7 supplemental. I was browsing the internet using Safari. When I tried to quit, I got the message that the download would be interrupted. I was surprised because I have not initiated any downloads or clicked ion anything suspicious. I have stopped the download and, trying to see what file was downloading, it only mentioned "browse", without any file type.
I trashed it but I am more than curious what it was. Most likely, malware? If so, how can I stop unwanted downloads in Safari?

Not abnormal. Just had same download happen. Choose if and when you want to then install.

What does it install, though? Because a file without an extension doesn’t sound right.

Look at your history of sites visited.
Use an ad blocker.
Drive by download without user action exists, even though rare.
Look at what extensions are installed.
Turn off JavaScript while you investigate.
Use private browsing.

I'm afraid you're right.

Safari 14 allows you to set download rights on a global/site by site basis.

I just set the global option to 'Ask' and then change specific sites to 'Allow', 'Deny' or 'Ask' as required...
