This has been going on for awhile and Google has been no help.

I usually write in either LibreOffice or Bean. No matter which one I use, I'll be in a middle of a document and without hitting any formatting controls, often in mid sentence BANG font style change. No warning. No reason.

I'm at a loss. I can change it back, of course, but after awhile it gets aggravating. Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this or how to stop it? I've considered a corrupt file, but if so, where would it be?

It's standard, common fonts it's switching between like times, times new roman and helvetica.

That's weird, the only thing I can think of is if there are 3rd party Apps installed.

Example, an App that maps certain keystroke combinations with an action.

If this happens quite a few times you could try in a new User Account, if it does not have this issue you know it is your normal User Account which is "affected".

Holding the Shift key instantly after login is also a way to see if this "solves" the problem, if it did, you have Login Apps interfering with the System.

Another thing to try is to repair fonts in FontBook.
