I received a text reply from a friend who is in my contact list, she was replying to an ongoing conversation.

However the message was shown on my lock screen differently, she is an Android user (not sure if that matters) and I've never previously had this type of message.

I unlocked my phone and the message (shown here) was not showing in the message thread.

Any ideas what may have caused this?

I believe that's called a flash message or something similar.
It's not a normal text messsge.
You just view once and dismiss.

I can't remember if there was a "mark urgent" in android os or not. I don't think it would trigger this. I've used android phones here and there but don't think there was anything specifically to trigger this.

Did you not click "Why did I receive this message?"

Have you not asked the sender how they sent it?

Those would've been my first and second courses of action.
