I took lots of photos yesterday in portrait mode natural light in actual natural lighting and lots of them have strange marks on my subject's faces. This has happened to me previously a few times, though a lot of my photos had them yesterday. Is this a known issue? Is my camera defective?

Thanks.

Whatever is going on, this is probably not hardware. Looks like software, maybe related to portrait mode. Are the non-portrait mode pictures coming out okay?

seems to be. but if it is not a common problem, I'm just wondering if it is hardware, if it was software, im guessing others would have the same issue?

Out of curiosity, are you on the latest version of IOS? If this is a common occurrence, maybe take the phone to the apple store and see what they say?

This happens on a moving subject/Challenging Light Scenarios with HDR Mode.

Not a hardware trouble in my view, if occurred once or twice.
