Well... Just came from the apple service and they gave me my MBP. It's not the screen's backlight.... Is the screen perse... The part# to be replace is 661-4346: Display Clamshell, 17" matte (AG).

Bring it to apple themselves if there is one near you. See if they would replace it under the 8600GT defect.

I tried that but the computer works if a monitor is connected to it.... so it's not the graphic card... :(

If Apple doesn't warranty, you can always use the laptop in clamshell mode if repairs are too $$$. Still a shame though.

Yes... it is a shame but there's nothing I can do right now. Maybe I will sell it on Ebay and get another computer.

For the Santa Rosa (and later) MacBook Pros, you're not really supposed to pry the screen open and change the backlight.

To the OP, you can get the replacement parts from a lot of online parts sellers. The one that most people here use seem to be ifixit. I have used welovemacs and they are fine too. If you can find it on ebay for cheaper then it's even better.

Note replacing the screen assembly requires the removal of the top case, which could be challenging. ifixit has a guide for it.

ifixit doesn't seem to have the part, but welovemacs do: http://www.welovemacs.com/6614346a1.html.

You could also look at upgrading it to a 1900 x 1200 screen... hope it works out for you.

This is a MIRACLE!!!!...

I turned my computer now and the screen came to life.... After the people at the Apple Service Store confirming that the screen was DEAD!... they also charged me $69 for the check up...

Now that the screen is not DEAD... what could happened?.... This is so wierd!

Would it be a good idea to reinstall everything... just in case is not a software issue?

Wow. I have no idea how it came back to life, but congratulations! Let's just hope it stays that way. I'm glad the problem seems to have resolved itself. :D
