Just picked up my new 2018 MBP 15" yesterday with the 2.6 i7 and there is this very strange noise...

From just basic web browsing and youtube videos, the MBP makes a noise similar to that of an old spinning HDD when reading or writing data. The noise has only appeared today, and I am hoping it is just fan noise.

Any ideas?

Is this your first MacBook Pro? What were you doing when the sound started? It’s most likely fan noise.

Thought the same. Coil whine is usually linked to motherboard design so I don’t know if replacements will remove it. Some users are just more sensitive to the noise to others.

you 2018's thought you'd escaped the 1st/2nd gen issues with the 3rd gen condom keyboard - did they forget to tell you - those 8th gen CPUs make a **** load of coil noise and clicks. Just wait till 2019 when Apple releases a "quieter processor". From a 2016 MBP nTB owner with clicky keys - pic related

edit: just so u knows, I had a HP specter xbox360 with the i7-8550u and it made hard drive clicky sounds - I'm not just being an *****, I'm speaking from experiences.

I’ve been through a few units and noticed what sounded like coil whine on all of them. Pitch varies with load.

I have also annoying coil whine but I only notice it when connected to my external monitors via a tb3 hub.

2018 i9 here with some very faint coil whine (I think). Only audible in a completely silent room. Can easily be reproduced by hovering the mouse cursor over any Safari window using a high-dpi mouse connected to USB. Yes, I'm serious – it's not happening when moving the cursor with the trackpad or an older USB mouse.

I think it was more pronounced in the first hours of use, but maybe I've just gotten used to it. :)

Edit: Interestingly, while similar, this is a slightly different type of noise than the one created by heavy SSD writes as described here: 2018 MBP 15 Coil Whine
