When ever i try to back up files to my external (mainly music files from buying with itunes or importing from a cd) that a lot of the files are saying it can't be put to the external. Some sort of error. I have tried it on multiple externals same result. It don't think it is the files either because my friend had the exact same files and had no problem with the same external.

Any advice or thoughts would be great.

How are the externals formatted? NTFS or FAT32 or HFS+?
Are you and your friend both using Mac's or is your friend's system a PC?

A bit more information on what the systems are, how the externals are formatted, how you're attempting to back up the files, and what the error messages are, would be useful.

Music files are usually pretty big so the disk format and system type matter:
    - Mac system with external formatted with HFS+ = should be OK
    - Mac system with external formatted with FAT32 = probably not OK
    - Mac system with external formatted with NTFS = probably not OK
    - PC system with external formatted with HFS+ = probably not OK
    - PC system with external formatted with FAT32 = probably not OK
    - PC system with external formatted with NTFS = should be OK
