Strange Problem with my Mac

I have the macbook pro that came out early 2011, and I have had the weirdest thing happen. Basically I can set my iPhone 4 on the left hand side of the trackpad, like lay it on my computer and it will make it look like I put the computer to sleep. It makes the screen go black, and It takes a second to restart just like when you close and open a macbook. Its really strange because It only does it on the left hand side, not the side with the hard drive. Anyone else have this happen?

Metal in the iPhone is triggering the the sensor that makes the computer sleep when the lid is closed.

I thought it needed a magnetic type of metal for that though? It's just stupid that my damn phone can't lay on my computer without turning it off
