Strange processes on startup

Since upgrading my iMac to Mountain lion (both 10.8.0 & 10.8.1) I've started seeing this on startup, it then doesn't proceed any further and doesn't boot up. If i hold down the power button to turn it off, then turn it on again it starts up fine.

Any ideas other than doing a clean install of how to stop it?

take a photo of the bottom of it, because we can't see what it says when it stops.
