Strange Typing Behavior

I'm unsure whether this is an issue with the macOS or with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015). Sometimes, when I select text, when I start typing, rather than simply replacing the selected text, it will start typing in the middle of the text. I can't nail down specific applications or circumstances when it happens (I need to do a screen capture when it happens again), but when it happens its frustrating.
