I would also be interested in the answer to this question, though based on some preliminary research it sounds like the answer is no. That would be a great feature.

Can you even stream video directly from a Macbook to ATV2, or do you need to use an iPhone/iPad?

Yes you can, there is an AirPlay button in iTunes.
