Sorry if this is the 100th post. Searched the forums but no direct answer to my question:

Currently when we watch a movie we play it on the Macbook Air and hook it via a cable to the tv.

Is there a way to play movies that are on the TC without the need for a computer? I read about the Apple TV, XBMC, Plex, Chromecast, Synology and it's starting to dazzle me. I just want it as a Christmas gift for my SO, so it should be as hassle-free but especially as cheap as possible 🙂

Apple TV + Beamer on your mac.

Just open any movie-file in beamer (mkv included), select subtitles, etc, and you'll be able to control (pause, rewind, fast forward, etc) with your apple tv remote.

I tried a lot of things, also htpc, but I found this solution to be working best for me, and very easy.
