I've got an LTE account and trial subscription to Apple Music, and trying to stream music working out at gym without my phone. Problem is that the watch keeps trying to attach to my phone when I get close to the locker room. Then it loses reception on cell and tries to grab wifi but it can't connect because of the "accept" requirement on wifi. I tried turning off wifi and this helped, but a few times it came back on? Thinking I may have to turn my phone off at the gym, leave off wifi and hope cell reception is good enough but it seems like this should take a bit less effort. Is there an easy way to listen to my music without changing things up at the gym?

Excellent simple idea on airplane mode. Need phone to check into gym but hitting airplane mode easy enough. Will give it a try.

Airplane mode should be suffice. If not, turn your phone off completely. 🙂

Airplane mode didn’t work. Phone was still connected to watch surprisingly. Next time just turning off the phone.

Do watch out that sometimes airplane mode keeps the Bluetooth icon and function on, so you’d have to manually turn off the Bluetooth toggle as well.. (if I’m not wrong the Apple Watch connects via Bluetooth)

Your phrasing makes it sound random. It isn't. The behavior as defined by Apple: "If you turn on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth while you're in Airplane mode, they will be on the next time you use Airplane mode, unless you turn them off while in Airplane mode." See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204234

This is why I specified "Put phone into airplane mode (with bluetooth & wifi turned off)"

Step 1: Put phone into airplane mode.
Step 2: If you see either bluetooth or wifi still on, turn them off.

Super simple and easy from Control Center. See the support document linked above.

No need to bother with turning off the phone.

NOTE: You'll want to turn off mirroring for Airplane mode - go into the Watch app on your phone select General -> AirplaneMode and slide "Mirror iPhone" to Off. You'll only need to do this once.

ah yes you’re right.. it’s just sometimes I don’t remember what I’ve done the last airplane mode so it seems random. Might be the same for some people..

Workout today put phone in airplane mode then turned off Bluetooth and Wifi. Watch took a minute to start playing music but never stopped during workout. Battery burned about 15% in 45 minutes but glad I had my tunes. Thanks for the input on getting this to work. Mg

Glad to hear. It's normal to take a minute to turn on the cellular radio after losing bluetooth connection as the watch first turns on the wifi system to try there before moving on to cellular. You can ameliorate the delay a bit by putting the phone in Airplane mode as you walk in to the gym if you don't need connectivity to check-in.

Also - phone should now remember that you have bluetooth & wifi turned off in Airplane mode and should turn those off the next time. Easy enough to see if you're using Control Center to turn on Airplane mode.
