Stress cracks on iPhone 3G considered cosmetic damage?

I have an iPhone 3G with Applecare. It has stress cracks near the 30pin connector. The Apple genius said that it's considered cosmetic damage and they usually don't replace the phone for that. Any truth in this or was the Genius pulling my chain?

Nonsense, the cracks are considered a manufacturers defect. Warranty and AppleCare have nothing to do with it. The Apple store will replace it. I had mine replaced for the same issue. Find a smarter "Genius".
