Stuck in Recovery - old iOS version

My iPhone is stuck in recovery mode and I've tried to use Recboot & tinyumbrella but it keeps going in a loop back to the USB cable & iTunes logo on the screen.

I believe it's because the version of iOS that is on the phone is outdated. What can I do to fix this?
