Got my new iMac today, ran the migration assistant, rebooted, at the login screen, after I enter the password and hit enter, the progress bar goes all the way to 100% and sits there forever. Any ideas? I did reset nvram / pram (didn't help).

how long do you think is reasonable? (I've interrupted it multiple times already). Leave it overnight?

Mine did the same thing. I can't recall how long it took for it to finally move on, but definitely around 10 minutes or so.

It’s a new machine, so some housekeeping chores need to be done. I think I’d be worried if after an hour, it still hadn’t reached the desktop. Perhaps the migration didn’t complete properly? Will it boot to recovery? From there you could run Disk Utility to try first aid on the boot volume and data volumes.

Thanks all. Safe boot couldn't log in either. I waited about an hour and half. First aid didn't help. Booted in recovery mode and now reinstalling macOS....

I never trusted those feature to recover from backup or migration assistant or whatever else...

The best is always to transfert back your data manually from backup (Time Machine or other) after OS finished setup.

I had the same issue. What fixed it was putting the source machine in target disk mode and then running migration on a dummy user account on the new iMac. I made sure to uncheck computer and network settings as well. It hung still for around 2 or so minutes after logging in for the first time but eventually proceeded to sign into iCloud and so on.

I'm having the same problem with my brand new iMac 2020. Also couldn't safe boot.
Am resintalling the MacOS now and hope that does it. Not an auspicious start.
I hope the reinstallation of the OS takes care of it!

Yeah reinstalling macOS from recovery fixed it for me.

Had the same issue with time machine on my new 2020. I waited about 30 min with it stuck on login and then just did a hard reboot and it logged in fine. 3 days and have not had a repeat of the issue.

I had this same issue it happened after i installed the APP lulu and it needed to restart. So i had to do a time machine backup from earlier that day. been fine since 2 days now.

Had the same issue when restoring a user from backup to a new M1 Mac on Monterey. I think it's an issue with Preferences.

Sadly other folders can be bypassed when restoring a user, but not the Library folder.

Reinstalling MacOS did not resolve the issue. Do you need to delete the user and restore it again after the reinstall? (Monterey reinstall does not delete users.) I noticed that the restored user home folder could not be saved when deleting the user (Unable to delete the user account.... an error occurred while backing up this user's home folder.)

I ended up mounting the Time Machine backup disk and copying Documents, Downloads etc manually from the latest backup using Finder.
