Anyone notice in the tech specs that the studio display requires a Mac running Monterey 12.3? I know people sometimes wait to upgrade to new OS's, and this has me holding off my order. I had planned to use this with my MacBook Air from work, but we're required to stay on Big Sur for the time being.

Was looking forward to ordering, but I guess my wallet will thank me for now.

Feels totally unnecessary for this monitor to have the A series processor in it. IMO this model should have included ethernet too so its a more "complete" docking station for use with laptops (I understand its designed for the Studio Mac). Similar to the old Thunderbolt Display.

Also wish there was a "dumb" version of this monitor, no speakers/webcam. Assuming the macOS 12.3 requirement is related to Center Stage, Spatial Audio and Hey Siri (in a monitor??). I'd buy 2 asap if they were just standard plug and play displays. Not holding my breath for apple to release another SKU unfortunately. Maybe it will revert to "dumb mode" if not used with macOS 12.3?

Completely agree with this... theoretically nothing in Thunderbolt protocol that would prevent all of this from being driven directly by a computer. Maybe the A13 cuts down on the GPU load?

I also assume that the display will work on older operating systems, but it will be interesting to see which features won't work.

In terms of Ethernet, Apple will say that the usb-c ports will do the trick... with an extra adapter ?

I am ordering the Studio Display and hope it will work with Big Sur which is what I am running on my M1 Mini.

The 3 extra USB-C ports will come in handy as my Mini has all ports being used including wired ethernet.

Will report back if any issues...

Or if no issues, please.
I wonder if the communication between the host and display's A13 is USB, PCIe, or Thunderbolt? Probably not Thunderbolt since A13 does not include Thunderbolt. Does A13 include PCIe? I am guessing the display uses Titan Ridge and a USB 10 Gbps hub and another hub connected to that for camera and audio. Then the A13 is connected to the second hub using USB. But if A13 is doing audio and video processing then it's more complicated: the camera and audio will be connected to the A13 via USB.

Just picked up my display. It’s beautiful. But for some reason my MacBook Air on Big Sur 11.6.4 doesn’t recognize the webcam. The speakers and USB ports are fine.

Tester on my MacBook Pro with Monterey 12.3 and all works fine.

Just find it odd Apple said that it would all work with Windows but not previous version of the macOS.

Tried using mine with 12.0 and it was stuck at 25% brightness or less and wouldn’t adjust in any direction. It also showed up as “StudioDisplay” (with no space) and used an old Cinema Display hardware icon in System Profiler. The audio did work. Updated to the latest OS and now everything is peachy.

My M1 Mini at 11.6.4 works with brightness, night shift, scaling, sound. No facetime camera.

Will be upgrading to Monterey as I just have the new Studio Mac to migrate my settings to...

So I learned tonight that if I keep the lid of my MacBook Air on 11.6.5, the camera in the Studio Display works. Odd, and I'm not sure if it's a bug or not. Once you close the lid, Zoom and FaceTime still show the Studio webcam, but there's no video.

Does anyone have an update on whether the Studio Display will fully function with MacBook Pro on 11.6.5? Specifically, has anyone done a firmware update using Monterey, then pluggin back into a Big Sur laptop? Rumors are this should work. Thanks.
