Im surprised that this display is still wired. Considering that it has an A chip inside, why not just make it into a wireless display with universal control support? Just put your macbook/iPad on its side, and bam. Man, such missed opportunity.

I’m trippin’. I don’t understand why USB 3 is worse than USB 2; how does that work?

It has more restrictions on it. It seems to be more proprietary possible. Hearing that some devices, and even cables, won't work on some devices, and for some purposes is disturbing. It's not 'universal'. We aren't in Kansas anymore...

Dumb question. Since the Studio display has a A13 Bionic built in for the web cam and running some version of iOS, can the display support Apple SideCar from other devices?
I don’t think it runs on an OS. The A13 is just to offload some processing from the devices you plug into it.

The Studio Display is not a standalone Mac or iOS device.

Why would someone use an iPad as a tradicional desktop connected to a ($1600) monitor? 😂
If I want to show something for a lot of people I just use Airplay or hdmi for keynotes…
While I've never tried, my understanding is that I can connect my mini to a USB-C monitor, and have display, mouse, and keyboard support with the single cable. It's not a perfect solution compared to macOS or Windows, but it's not really different than Universal Control either.

In order to do those processing, it has to have some sort of an OS. Will be interesting to see what it's running. Maybe an even more condensed and simplified version of tvOS.

I'm going to predict that whatever OS inside this display, might be what we would see in the Apple AR/VR glasses.

Curious what happens if you connect a Gen1 iPad Pro (with USB3 5Gbps over Lightning) to a Lightning to USB-A adapted connected to a USB-A to USB-C adapter. Does that output a 4K picture? 1080p? Nothing?

10 Gbps is USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 (formerly known as USB 3.1 Gen 2), but in no way is it USB 2.1.

The next USB standard was USB 3.2 Gen2x2, which has the bandwidth of 20 Gbps

The latest USB standard is USB 4, which supports USB 4 Gen3x2, which has the bandwidth of 40 Gbps

So even if I had the money for 3 of these, I won’t be getting them after all. It kinda seems a bit limiting. I use my monitors for 3 different devices and need HDMI inputs, as well as old school display ports. These look really nice, but I guess I should just stick with LG displays.

The market might not be ready for a wireless-only high(ish)-end 5K monitor. However I agree that it would be nice if Apple's displays had built in Wi-Fi and could function as an Airplay target just like many third-party TVs can these days.

Bummer, but honestly, who really wants to use an external display with an iPad? No matter the model you have, and except very few apps, you’ll be stuck with 4:3 mirroring. Nobody wants that on a 5K monitor

Honestly I’m kinda glad I dodge the iPad Mini 6 as it’s seemingly, like the iPhone 13 mini, becoming a bullet from Apple and in Tim’s eyes. Last years Purple colour as well as this years green he didn’t mention 12/13 mini at all just iPhone 12.

Cutting out last years iPad Air - which I think was released less than 9 months ago (?) is really mean.

Looks like you gotta have M1 minimum for device longevity and performance.

I may just buy 3 decent 4K monitors for about half price of this monitor...

Sony is going to release a 42" OLED TV soon, I wonder if it will work well as a Monitor. It may need to be further away from me to be able to see it clearly.

So I have a 2019, 16-in MBP (work computer). It's currently on 11.6.4 and I can't upgrade it (yet). The specs on the display say 12.3. Does anyone know if I will be able to use at all with this machine?

With a HDMi 2.1 to USB-C adaptor cable, do you think the Apple TV 4K would output to this?
