For anyone hanging on to old retired technologies, stories like this help identify clear advantages to buying a new device.

It's also a reminder of the issues still plaguing mobile devices and the surrounding technology .

A 10 year old computer will still manage online data flow just as well as the latest model, with just minor differences depending on the application . Only the speed and quality of the connection really affects performance .

Mobile devices on the other hand are a work in progress, on the hardware and network side, they just aren't properly developed tech yet .

It's the new 5Ge
You mean this BS 5Ge?

This crap showed up on my phone when I landed in DC so I ran a Speedtest to see how good it really is. It sucked.
I was getting an average of 70Mbps in Phx on regular LTE.

Yup.
On a real, live iPhone 5S as we speak, LTE just tested:

12.99 download speed.

I'll live.

Same here. 64.18 Download, 5.2 upload on LTE with my 5s. Now with my TEN S Max I’m getting 323 download and 155 upload. Isn’t that more than double? Hmmm

I thought the real world speeds were capped by the antenna speeds installed by the telecoms...

All I can say is when I see Japanese commuters mess around surfing and mainly Instagraming with their new A12 chip machines....man they are fast.
The ladies especially have machine gun speed lightning fingers ... even an XR looks slippery fast!
Maybe it is the Japanese characters that come up quicker than English....or maybe i am holding my 6s wrong...hehe.

if you feel like your 6s is really really slow, than it's possible that you've got an older battery and iOS's battery throttling has been enabled

get the battery health checked. it might be time for a new battery.

I don’t think wirless speed should be the primary concern. It should be latency and reliability.

Even the top average speed here doesn’t come close to the initial theoretical speed for LTE which was 100mbps back in 2011.

I understand 20 mbps is faster than 10, but really, how much faster is your safari page going to load? My home wi-fi network has consistent download speeds of 180 mbps. LTE speeds out and about are usually 20 to 40 or so. I see no difference in performance between home and outside use.

Now, if Apple would only allow users to download large apps over cellular, I think the increased speeds would make a huge difference, but day to day use? I could live with 10 or 20 mbps. It's not like we can stream 4K on any iOS device (which I understand requires 20 mbps).

What you say is accurate. There comes a point where a MR page will not load perceptually faster as your download speed increases beyond a certain point.

As far as streaming 4K, at least on Verizon, I don't think you can stream 4K unless you have one of the grandfathered plans as Verizon limits the resolution to 720. Don't know about the other carriers.

The xs is lightning fast compared to the 6s. I had both at the same time to compare before I returned the 6s for the rebate.

wait wait... brand new phone that is 5 times more expensive and 5 years newer is 2 x faster in download speed as the other one??

Can't innovate my ass!!!!

also, Macrumour, you should be ashamed to post this kind of garbage.

That’s about as valid as comparing the pixel count between the original iPad and the 2018 Pro just so Phil Schiller can get a nerdgasm on stage.

Must be a slow news day. This has to be the dumbest headline I’ve ever read.

It's a dumb headline... if you're a gadget-head. If you're a normal, average consumer, it's not dumb at all. Average people like to have the specific advantages spelled out of discarding an older, but adequate, product in favor of a new one.

Notice I mentioned 'smartphone' and not 'dumbphone' so that means running Safari with tabs and switching between apps which are useless on 1GB DRAM due to app reloads and Safari running out of memory and spinning the gear.
Plenty of people are using those phones just fine even these days. So certainly not useless for many.

Thx for the feedback and actually I did replace my battery in December. It is definitely better but newer tech will always be faster of course.

I would just like to be able to download larger apps over cellular. I know there are people with LTE faster than their home wi-fi set up (like my parents). I suppose Apple just wants to make sure you don't crush your data, but speeds are so fast now---how about just giving me a warning and letting me do what I want to do?

Hardly surprising considering the XS Max is 5 years newer than the 5S and the XS Max has newer technology etc.

Hey, let’s compare iPhones released 5 years apart from one another... At the high rate tech advances and changes each year, you might as well be comparing a Ford Model T versus a Ford Explorer. (Overly exaggerated s/c)

I would like to understand what happened to the XS Max Antennagate claims that emerged on first release. Did all those with lousy performance in one-bar reception areas simply exercise their 14-day return option??? Does nobody remember this concern when it emerged in September?

Don't know. Maybe most of the issues were resolved by software updastes.
Seems like equivalent type chatter that happens on every single phone release from every single manufacturer. But anecdotally my max is fine as far as performance and the lack of dropped calls. But thanks for bring the information to our attention.;)
